There are different types of folklore, e.g., myths, folktales, fables, fairy tales, legends, and ballads.  Although there are distinct characteristics for each of these types of folklore, they are not always clear and easy to distinguish.  The characteristics may change between cultures, or over time.

You have read samples of folklore in your 8th grade literature book.

1.  Select a ballad, a fable, a legend, a myth and a folktale that you have read.  Use the Reading Log of Folklore (see attachments) or another graphic organizer to give examples of the characteristics presented on the log.

2.  Use these characteristics and your examples to decide which type of folktale you would like to write.  Your final project must include all the characteristics of the type of folklore you have chosen to write. To enhance reader interest, remember to include the use of dialogue.

3.  .  Research (e.g., Internet, research library, interviews with storytellers) the elements that make an effective storyteller, and make a list of these elements, e.g., props, costumes, illustrations, etc.

4.  Share your original tale with your classroom teacher, a peer, or your class incorporating effective storytelling techniques.
