By
the end of the year, we expect kindergarten students to be able to:

use their knowledge of letter sounds to figure out a few simple,
regularly spelled, single syllable words;
·
read simple texts containing familiar letter-sound correspondences and
high frequency words.
·
give evidence that they are following the meaning of what they are
reading;
·
respond to simple questions about the book’s content (for example, “Can
you tell me what this story was about?” “What was Maria trying to do?” “Why did
Antoine hide under the bed?”).

· write without resistance when given the time, place and materials;

use whatever
means are at hand to communicate and make meaning; drawings, letter strings,
scribbles, letter approximation and other graphic representations as well as

Task:
Small Group
Using the book, Mr. Grump, (from
The teacher
might say something like the following: “As we are reading the story, I want
you to think about what is the problem in the story. After we have read the story, each of you
will draw pictures and write about 3 things, the character, the problem, and how
the problem was solved."
After the story is read, students will use a
tri-fold paper to illustrate and record the 3 items:
Who are the main characters in the
story?
What is the problem in the story?
How was the problem solved?
