Artery and Vein Construction

Anatomy and Physiology

Grade Level 11 - 12
Standards Human Anatomy and Physiology Content
Students will understand the role of the circulatory system in providing nutrients and oxygen to the body
Objectives
  1. Describe the means by which the heart provides blood for the metabolic requirements for all blood cells.
  2. Compare and contrast the structure and function of arteries.
Materials and Activities
Materials
  1. Household products
  2. Sticky pads
Activities
Engage
  1. Is the structure of an artery and the vein the same?
  2. Yes or No? Tell why you think so?
  3. Write it on a sticky and put on the board.
Explore
  1. Divide into groups.
  2. Using household products, construct an artery and vein model represented on page326 (Chapter 11)of your textbook.
  3. Must label and identify all major components.
Explain In your own words, describe the material used for which structure and the purpose of that structure.
Elaborate Have students make up their own blood composition to be put through their model. The blood must be able to enter the artery and exit the vein. This will show how much more pressure must be exerted in the arteries than the vein.
Evaluation Students must go back and analyze if their model worked or didn't work as a vein and artery and tell why. Assessment of their models construction and the label/identifying for evaluation, also.
