DRAFT

The Cardiac Output and the Heart

Anatomy and Physiology
Grade Level 11 - 12
Standards Human Anatomy And Physiology Content
Students will understand the role of the circulatory system in providing nutrients and oxygen to the body
Objectives
  1. Students will be able to describe the location of the heart in the chest cavity and identify its major anatomical areas on an appropriate model or diagram.
  2. Students will be able to trace the pathway of blood through the heart.
Materials and Activities
Materials These are some of the suggested materials that can be used for this activity.
-cut outs of the major anatomical parts of the heart.
-color pens or pencils
-paper (any color)
-stopwatch
-graph paper
Activities
Engage
  1. How may anatomical parts does the heart have?
  2. What direction does the blood takes to enter and leave the heart?
Explore
  1. Working in groups of two, students will build the internal anatomical parts of the heart, using the supplied cut outs.
  2. Label the parts of the heart diagram using the correct terminology.
  3. Students will make a table of anatomical parts and their functions.
Anatomical Parts (internal) Functions 1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
9.
(You can modify and only select the internal parts that you want them to know)
  1. Using a marker draw an arrow showing where the blood enters the heart, then using a different color marker trace the path of the blood exiting the heart.
Explain
  1. Using an overhead projector or a video students will correct/ revise their blood flow diagrams.
  2. The teacher will explain in detail the correct blood flow through the heart.
  3. Talk about the pumping action of the blood through the heart
Elaborate
  1. Define stroke volume and cardiac output.
  2. Students will take their heart rate, and using the following formula be able to calculate the Cardiac Output.
    1. CO= heart rate ( 75 beats per min) * stroke volume ( 70ml per beat)
  3. Students will compare their personal heart rate and cardiac output with 5 other students in the class.
  4. Using the data collected from the other students in the class, the student will make a table and graph.
  5. With the table and graph, the student will analyze the results to write a conclusion.
Evaluation
  1. Students will be tested on their knowledge and skills (research, cooperative learning and math).
  2. Assess ability to obtain data and graph that data.
Homework Finish what was not done in class at home.
