The Digestive Travels of a Burrito

Objectives To identify the organs and accessory organs of the digestive system.
Materials and Activities
Engage What is the process of digestion and where does your burrito start being digested?
Explore Distribute cut outs of digestive and accessory organs (with pictures and names) and ask students to put them in order by how they work in the digestive system. Cut outs should include mouth, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, liver, gall bladder, large intestine, anus.
Explain Discuss results from Explore. What was frustrating? 
Discuss burrito components: 
carbohydrates - tortillas, beans, vegetables 
fats - meat, sour cream, cheese 
proteins - meat, cheese, beans
Question: Which nutrients are digested first? Hint: Think from simple molecules to more complex. 
Elaborate Using a model, either a 3-D or CD-ROM simulation, place digestive organs in order.
Evaluation Check for understanding by using index cards and again asking the question from the Engage What is the process of digestion?
