| This site has been
designed to provide all Technology Leadership Team Institute Facilitators
information needed to have a successful experience. If you need additional
information or have comments about this site, feel free to contact the DoDEA Project
Manager. Research has shown that students are more successful in a rich, engaged learning environment. Our institutes focus on Engaged Learning and what is needed to help schools make this paradigm shift. Educators throughout the world are beginning to use the power of technology to support teaching and learning strategies. Our institutes help teachers make the connection between teaching, learning, and technology. Technology is used as a tool to support the learning environment rather than as the focus of instruction. Originally developed in 1998 with the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) each institute has taken on a life of its own. Each time we conduct an institute, we get a little closer to the right balance of elements. We try to emmulate an Engaged Learning environment and our facilitators are instrumental in making that happen. Rather than use direct instruction, we present information through projects and activities designed to engage the participants and build on their prior knowledge. As with our participants, we expect our facilitators to be actively involved in the process. You should be familiar with the materials and activities before you come to the institute. In an effort to help make the process consistent, we have designed the agenda and activities to include a balance of small and large group work. Therefore, we ask that you stick to the agenda and use our activities as much as possible. Each evening we will debrief to discuss how the activities went, identify problem areas, and prepare for the next day. These meetings last between 1-2 hours and all facilitators are expected to attend. It is our intention to bring all facilitators to the United States for a face-to-face meeting in the spring. We also use eGroups as a means of sharing information and becoming familiar with the content. All facilitators are expected to participate in discussions and contribute ideas. During the summer institutes, we divide into four homerooms. Institutes held during the school year are generally smaller and are divided into two homerooms. Each homeroom has two facilitators - one outside our system and one from DoDEA - and between 20 and 24 participants. Facilitators are selected based on their ability to work with people. The consultants are subject matter experts in technology while their DoDEA counterparts are usually district curriculum liaisons. Since the focus of the institute is on professional development and the change process, facilitators need not be technology experts. There will be plenty of technical support at the institute to assist you as you model the use of technology in your professional development activities. These institutes have been designed to be as paperless as possible. All the agendas, activities, articles, and presentations are available on this site. You should spend several hours visiting the site and becoming familiar with this material. The RESOURCES section identifies external links and should be referenced continously during the institutes. Participants should be reminded to review the core concepts, guiding questions, and agenda throughout the days' activities. Each homeroom is equipped with an InFocus projector, TV/VCR, two workstations per team, and printers. All workstations have direct connectivity to the Internet and are networked. We have created folders on the network where teams can store their work. If possible, we will create a CD at the conclusion of the workshop containing all the files created during the week. Each team will receive materials during institutes. As we continue to identify relevent resources, these materials will change. Examples of materials provided at previous institutes include: Through the Cracks, Learn and Live, ISTE Connecting Curriculum and Leadership in Instructional Technology. Copies of all materials used will be provided to facilitators as well. As you'll note from the daily agenda, each task is a link and has a very general description. The complete Facilitator's Guide is available as a Acrobat (pdf) file. |
