ARLINGTON, VA — DoDEA will sponsor three students—one from DoDDS-Europe, DoDDS-Pacific, and DDESS—to attend the 2009 Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is a 6-week residential summer program during which participants work under the mentorship of eminent scientists and researchers. The institute will take place on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from June 21 to August 1, 2009. It is sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) in collaboration with MIT. Expenses for lodging and meals are included as part of the RSI Program. DoDEA will pay for travel.
Students selected to participate in RSI will experience college-level classes taught by distinguished professors from leading universities. Classes are designed to sharpen students' research skills as they complete hands-on research guided by mentors from corporations, universities and research organizations.
RSI is open to students who have completed the third year of high school by the summer of 2009. Students need to provide evidence of their leadership potential in science and mathematics and an ability to lead in community and school activities. The selection of students is based on the following criteria:
Students may obtain more information about RSI as well as an application form on the Center for Excellence in Education's website - www.cee.org. In addition, DoDEA has a website which contains useful information pertaining to RSI (www.dodea.edu/students/rsi.cfm ). Interested students should download the online application, complete it, and submit it to their principal. Principals will ensure that the completed applications are sent to the Area Deputy Directors who will facilitate selections at the Area level.
