E.C. Killin Elementary School Teacher Selected as DoDEA History Teacher of the Year
The National History Teacher of the Year Award recognizes outstanding K-12 American history teachers from every state and DoDEA. Sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, The History Channel and Preserve America, this competition is open to any full-time K-12 educator who teaches American history (including state and local history) as either an individual subject or through social studies, reading or language arts. A panel of teachers, administrators, and academics from DoDEA chose Lisk.
Teachers are rated based on the following criteria:
- At least three years of classroom teaching experience.
- A demonstrated commitment to teaching American history.
- Evidence of creativity and imagination in the classroom.
- Effective use of documents, artifacts, historic sites, oral histories, and other primary resources to engage students with American history.
According to E.C. Killin Elementary School Assistant Principal, Michelle Jones, Lisk was nominated to be the DoDEA History Teacher of the Year based on her progressive approach to teaching history and her skill in creating tailored lesson plans demonstrating direct connections between the classroom and everyday life.
“Mrs. Lisk is a highly effective educator who brings the past to life by engaging students through project-based learning,” said Jones. “Her enthusiasm, passion and dedication to history is portrayed in all aspects of the classroom environment and leads to a firm foundation of historical awareness.
“Mrs. Lisk integrates 21st century technology skills and content to produce life-long learners,” Jones added. “Mrs. Lisk's dynamic teaching style surpasses expectations for optimal learning on a continuing basis for education excellence.”
Lisk has been teaching in DoDEA schools for 13 years in a variety of overseas positions in Germany, Turkey and Japan and in the United States in Kentucky.
Lisk said she always sets out to impact her students by being a constant in their lives.
“Personally, I seek to make a difference in my student’s lives by being their constant, nurturing advocate,” said Lisk. “As an educator in a DoDEA school, I am one of the most essential, steadfast people in every student’s life due to them coming from a military family.”
State History Teachers of the Year receive a prize package including a certificate of recognition, a $1,000 award, a collection of classroom resources to be presented in their honor to their school library, and the opportunity to participate in a Gilder Lehrman Institute summer seminar.
Each state winner is also a finalist for the National History Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced in the fall. A panel of judges comprising the previous national winner, renowned historians, professors, and teachers, reads and evaluates all state winner materials based on the criteria for the award and selects the National History Teacher of the Year.
In addition, Lisk’s school will be named a Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School. Affiliate Schools receive invitations to regional forums with noted historians, access to an exclusive section of web sites with extensive teacher resources such as lesson plans, toolkits, and primary source documents to use in the classroom, priority access to teacher seminars and traveling exhibitions.
