Elementary School Positions
All educators applying for elementary classroom teaching positions must possess 24 semester hours of elementary education course work. No second category is required, except where noted. A valid state or territory certificate/license may be accepted in lieu of meeting the minimum qualification requirements which will result in a DoDEA 2-year Provisional License being issued upon selection. The minimum qualification standards are as follows:
A major in early childhood education (ECE) or a degree in elementary education with 24 SH in ECE is required. The 24 SH must be in course description or title containing early childhood, kindergarten, or pre kindergarten training. Course work in methods of teaching emerging literacy and methods of teaching mathematics for early childhood, kindergarten, or pre kindergarten is required. Two years of full-time experience teaching pre kindergarten or kindergarten may be substituted for 3 SH of the required ECE course work.
Applicants must meet the educational requirements for category 0095. Applicants must provide proof of near native proficiency to instruct languages in German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, or Korean. The proof of near native proficiency is evidenced by submitting a rating of an "Advanced High" or "Superior" rating from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Inc. (ACTFL). ACTFL may be contacted at (914) 963-7110 (Language Testing) to make arrangements for an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).
Course work must include methods of teaching reading, math, language arts, and science. Note: In addition, a methods course or 1 year teaching experience in art, music, or physical education in the elementary school is required. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired. All applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 SH containing early childhood education if reassignment to lower elementary grades 1-3 becomes necessary for continuous employment.
The applicant seeking an endorsement in Compensatory Education, Reading, shall fulfill all the requirements for an endorsement in elementary education and have a minimum of 24 SH of course work in reading/language arts. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired.
The applicant seeking an endorsement in Compensatory Education, Mathematics, shall fulfill all the requirements for an endorsement in elementary education and have a minimum of 15 SH of course work in mathematics. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired.
Applicants must meet the educational requirements for categories 0101-0108. Applicants must provide proof of near native proficiency to instruct languages in German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, or Korean. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Inc. A major in art or a minimum of 24 SH in art is required. Course work must include a methods course in teaching art at the elementary level and at least one course each in drawing, painting, and art history/art appreciation. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in art is required.
A major in music or a minimum of 24 SH in music is required. Course work must include a methods course in teaching music at the elementary level. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in music is required.
A major in physical education or a minimum of 24 SH in physical education. Course work must include a methods course in teaching physical education at the elementary level. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in physical education is required.
Must be a currently certified Reading Recovery teacher having completed a university course taught by a qualified Teacher Leader for a full academic year. A Reading Recovery certificate must be provided. A second teaching category is required.
Must be a currently certified Reading Recovery Teacher Leader having completed a full-time residential program for an academic year at an accredited Reading Recovery Teacher Leader Training Site. One year of Reading Recovery Teacher Leader experience beyond the training year is required. Reading Recovery certificate must be provided. A second teaching category is required.
DoDEA or State certificate as an elementary classroom teacher AND 24 semester hours in Spanish
or,
DoDEA or State certificate as an elementary classroom teacher AND Spanish Language

The elementary methods course work must be completed before the third school year of employment.

DoDEA or State certificate as a secondary classroom teacher AND Spanish Language

Middle School Positions, Grades 6-8
DoDDS operates middle schools and combination middle/secondary schools. A valid state or territory certificate/license may be accepted in lieu of meeting the minimum qualification requirements which will result in a DoDEA 2-year Provisional License being issued upon selection. The minimum qualification standards are as follows:
A major in English or a minimum of 24 SH in English. A maximum of 5 SH in speech and/or journalism may be credited toward meeting this requirement. Course work must include English literature, American literature, the teaching of composition (writing process), and at least 9 upper level semester hours in English.
A major in speech, a minimum of 24 SH in speech and dramatic arts or a minimum of 9 SH in speech plus sufficient additional course work in English to total at least 24 SH is required. A minimum of 9 SH of upper level course work in the field of English, communication arts, or speech is required.
A major in journalism, a minimum of 24 SH in journalism or a minimum of 9 SH in journalism plus sufficient additional course work in related fields such as communication, speech, or English to total at least 24 SH is required. A minimum of 9 SH of upper level course work in the field of English, communication arts, speech, or journalism is required.
A major in social studies or a minimum of 24 SH in social studies. Course work must include U.S. history, world history, political science, and physical geography. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in social studies is required. A minimum of 3 SH is required in the specific subject area assigned.
A major in general science or a minimum of 24 SH in the field of general science. Course work must include a minimum of 9 SH of upper level science courses. For teacher of life science and earth science, 9 SH are required in the assigned subject.
A major in health or a minimum of 24 SH in specific health related course work. Course work must include a minimum of 9 SH of upper level health courses.
A major in mathematics or a minimum of 24 SH in mathematics. Course work must include a minimum of 9 SH of upper level course work in mathematics.
Secondary School Positions (Usually Grades 7-12)
DoDDS operates a variety of school configurations. Secondary teachers may be required to teach at the middle and senior high school levels. Endorsements for optional additional categories in other content areas can be met with 24 semester hours of credit once an educator has met the 30 semester hour requirement for the initial category. A valid state or territory certificate/license may be accepted in lieu of meeting the minimum qualification requirements which will result in a DoDEA 2-year Provisional License being issued upon selection. The minimum qualification standards are as follows:
Applicant must be fully qualified for another secondary position, and in addition have a minimum of 6 semester hours in courses directly related to video communications systems. Creditable course work must include video production design and processes. Two years of full-time experience teaching video communications may be substituted for 3 semester hours of the required course work. Industry certification in video processing software may be considered in lieu of up to 3 semester hours of course work in this area.
A major in English or a minimum of 30 SH in English. A maximum of 5 SH in speech and/or journalism may be counted toward meeting this requirement. A major in physics or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of science is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in physics and a minimum of 12 SH of upper level courses in science.
A major in health or a minimum of 30 SH in specific health related course work is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level health courses.
A state OR DoDEA professional teacher certificate in any secondary area AND a current valid license as a Registered Nurse AND 2 ½ years of experience at the level that demonstrates instruction or supervision of employees in a health care field is required.
A major in mathematics or a minimum of 30 SH in mathematics is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level mathematics. A second category is not required.
A major in art or a minimum of 30 SH in art is required. Course work must include one course in each of the following areas: methods of teaching art, drawing, painting, art, history, and sculpture or ceramics. A minimum of 12 SH in upper level art course work is required.
A major in music or a minimum of 30 SH in music is required. Course work must include one course each in methods of teaching music, methods of vocal music instruction and instrumental music methods instruction. A minimum of 12 SH in upper level music course work is required. A second category is not required.
Must be fully qualified in art, music, English, or social studies. Applicant must have completed a minimum of 9 SH in other related fields such as: humanities, art, music, history, drama, theater, literature, dance, or philosophy.
A major in physical education or a minimum of 30 SH in physical education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level physical education courses.
A major in business or a minimum of 30 SH in the field of business is required. Course work must include one accounting course, a minimum of 12 SH in upper level business courses and a minimum of 9 SH in computer science courses.
A major in computer science, a minimum of 18 SH in computer science or 12 SH in computer science with additional qualification as a teacher of mathematics, science, or business is required. Course work must include programming languages such as JAVA, C++, VISUAL BASIC or other equivalent computer programming course work.
Must be fully qualified in either business, industrial arts, guidance, vocational occupation subjects, career education or home economics. Course work must include at least 3 SH in career counseling, career guidance and/or vocational occupational counseling.
A major in home economics or a minimum of 30 SH in home economics is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in upper level home economics courses.
A major in industrial technology or industrial arts, or a minimum of 30 SH in technology education or industrial arts is required. A minimum of 12 SH of upper level course work in technology education is required. Course work should include such courses as: Construction Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Communication Technology, Energy Power, Transportation Technology, Industrial Arts Curriculum Project, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD).
DoDEA or State certificate as a Chinese (Mandarin) Language Teacher
or,
DoDEA or State certificate as a secondary classroom teacher in any category AND Chinese (Mandarin) communication skill as verified by an ACTFL Foreign Language Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) rating of at least an intermediate high score.
or,
Applicants must possess four of the following:
1. Chinese (Mandarin) communication skill as verified by an ACTFL Foreign Language
Oral Proficiency Interview (OP1) rating of at least an intermediate high score; and
2. English language communication skill as verified by an ACTFL English Language
Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) rating of at least an intermediate high score; and
3. A baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting

A major in foreign language or a minimum of 30 SH of foreign language course work in the subject area for which applying is required. A minimum of 12 SH of upper level foreign language course work is required.
(Certified) - Certified training instructor applicants must meet the minimum requirements stated in the Application Requirements and Information - Minimum Academic Preparation and Requirements; and Student Teaching or Internship. One year of teaching experience is required and may be in an adult education program, middle or secondary school, college, or industrial establishment in the particular occupational field(s) for which applying.
(Non certified) - Non certified training instructor applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Additionally, they must complete a formal program at or above the high school level (or vocational high school level), trade school, or military/Peace Corps training program in the specialty area. Evidence (diploma or journeyman license) must be submitted; 2 1/2 years of experience at the level that demonstrates instruction or supervision of employees in the specialty for which applying are required. Up to 1 1/2 years of the required 2 1/2 years of experience may be substituted by education at the rate of 1 year of study for 9 months of experience in the subject specialty for which applying. A second category is not required.
Must be retired from active duty military at least 180 days prior to appointment. Must be certified to teach JROTC from respective headquarters services. Retired officers must have bachelor’s degree. A second category is not required.
Education Support Positions
Many of these positions require the educator to provide services to more than one school or school complex and involve travel to various locations. Special education positions may require teaching children at any age level with a variety of disabilities ranging from mild to severe. In addition, most special education teachers are expected to participate on multidisciplinary assessment teams. A second category is required, except where noted. A valid state or territory certificate/license may be accepted in lieu of meeting the minimum qualification requirements when issued a 2-year Provisional License. The minimum qualification standards are as follows:
Must have completed AVID Implementation Training sponsored by either an AVID Center or DoDEA. Verification that the training has been completed must be provided; this may be a copy of the AVID certificate, 1 SH of graduate credit or documentation which verifies that the applicant has attended the minimum 2- or 3-day training session. A second teaching category is required.
A minimum of 24 SH in language arts/reading is required. Course work must include teaching of composition (writing process), developmental reading instruction, remediation of reading difficulties, children’s literature and diagnosis and prescription instruction.
A minimum of 30 SH in reading/language arts is required. Course work must include teaching of composition (writing process), content area reading instruction, methods of reading instruction, remediation of reading difficulties and diagnosis and prescription.
Requires a master’s degree in speech/language pathology with course work distributed over at least 4 of the following areas: assessment of young children, assistive technology, augmentative communication, low incidence disabilities which include Autism Spectrum Disorder, selective autism, mental retardation, aphasia/dysphasia, cleft palate, and traumatic brain injury. Training in basic audiology and speech disorders is required. A second category is not required.
A master’s degree in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH in courses such as individual tests and measurements, including interpreting and report results, diagnostic techniques and assessment, adaptive behavior assessment, functional behavioral assessment, collaborative (arena) assessment, developmental task analysis, diagnosis of reading disabilities, assessment and identification of low incidence disabilities and specific learning impairments (specific learning disabilities and mental retardation), and assessment of young children. A second category is not required.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH directly related to severe or multiple disabilities. Typical courses include the following: the nature of mental retardation, use of adaptive equipment, augmentative communication and equipment, adaptive physical education, and family support.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH directly related to physical or multiple disabilities. Typical courses include the following: nature of crippling, special health problems, methods and materials of teaching physically handicapped and educational measurement.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work may include diagnostic-prescriptive type instruction, curriculum based assessment and instruction, remediation activities, educable mentally disabled and behavior disorders.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH directly related to severe and profound disabilities or mental retardation.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH directly related to emotional impairments or behavior disorders.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work must include a minimum of 12 SH directly related to preschool or early childhood education.
A major in gifted education or a minimum of 15 SH in gifted education is required. Additionally, a supervised practicum or fieldwork in gifted is required. Course work should include courses such as nature and needs of gifted students, and guidance and counseling of exceptional students.
A major in ESL or a minimum of 24 SH in ESL is required. Course work should include such courses as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, comparative cultures, language development, and social psychology of the bilingual child are required. A minimum of 6 SH in the theory and methodology of teaching English as a second language is required.
A minimum of 30 SH of professional teacher education course work appropriately distributed in middle and secondary education is required. A minimum of 15 SH in math and 24 SH in reading, or 24 SH in math and 15 SH in reading is required.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work should include remedial methods, anatomy of the ear, speech mechanism, methods of auditory training, psychology of the child with disabilities, child development and educational measurement. Sign language proficiency in American Sign Language and/or Signed Exact English is required.
A major in special education or a minimum of 30 SH in special education is required. Course work in the methods of teaching Braille is required. Course work should also include remedial methods, nature and needs of students who are blind, Braille, anatomy and physiology of the eye, orientation and mobility and low vision training.
A master’s degree in speech/language pathology is required. Course work should include training in basic audiology and speech disorders. A second category is not required.
Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, or be licensed as a registered nurse or school nurse. Current state nurse registration must be provided. A second category is not required.
Requires a minimum of 12 SH in library/information science distributed over at least four of the following areas: library administration; cataloging and classification; reference; children’s or adolescent literature; collection development; selection of print/non-print materials; current issues and trends in information science; and library automation.
Also, requires a minimum of 12 SH in technology distributed over at least four of the following areas: computer applications; multimedia/audiovisual production; internet technology; on-line information/services; desktop publishing; network management; distance learning systems; and library automation.
A major in Instructional Technology or a minimum of 18 SH of instructional technology-related course work is required. The 18 semester hours are divided into two general categories – instructional courses and technology courses.
Instructional courses must be distributed in at least three of the following instructional areas: instructional design, distance education, integration of technology into curriculum, planning for technology, assessment of technology, technology and special needs, and staff development.
Technology courses must be distributed in at least three of the following technology areas: web and/or graphics design, contemporary programming languages, multimedia, digital video, internet in classroom, databases, and local and/or wide area networks in instructional settings.
A minimum of 24 SH in the field of career and vocational education or 12 SH in the field of career and vocational education with sufficient additional course work to qualify as a teacher of industrial arts, or business, or home economics, or career practicum, is required. Course work must include one course in career counseling, career guidance, or vocational.
Pupil Personnel Services Positions
Some positions may require the educator to provide services to more than one school or school complex (itinerant position). A second category is required, except where noted. A valid state or territory certificate/license may be accepted in lieu of meeting the minimum qualification requirements when issued a 2-year Provisional License. The minimum qualification standards are as follows:
A master’s degree in school psychology or a state license in school psychology is required. Course work must have included a practicum in school psychology. A second category is not required.
A master’s degree in educational guidance and counseling, or a master’s degree with a minimum of 30 SH of graduate course work well distributed over the areas of guidance and counseling with practical application to programs and practices in a PreK-12 school setting is required. Course work must include guidance and counseling in the elementary, middle or secondary school (PreK-12); legal and ethical issues in counseling; counseling children and adolescents; administration and interpretation of tests; career counseling; and drug education. Additionally, a practicum in PreK-12 school guidance and counseling is required. A second category is not required.
