DoDEA Students Chosen to Participate at the Research Science Institute
ARLINGTON, VA — Three students from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Schools were selected to participate in the 2009 Research Science Institute (RSI) Program held from June through August at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Husain Mogri, from Bahrain American School, Derrick Lewis, from Ramstein High School and Shannon Grammel, from Heidelberg American High School were chosen to represent DoDEA. All three students are currently in their junior year of school.
To be considered for the program, students submit an application and compete to be among the 75 high school students, selected from the United States and other nations, who participate in the program each year.
Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education, RSI is a six-week residential summer program which allows participants to work under the mentorship of eminent scientists and researchers.
Students attend college-level classes taught by distinguished professors; work with scientists, mathematicians, and engineers; and complete hands-on research with professionals at corporations, universities and research organizations. Twenty-one previous DoDEA students have participated in the RSI program.
"This is such a wonderful opportunity for our students," said Dr. Shirley Miles, DoDEA Director. "In addition to exposure to a research environment that many will never have the opportunity to see, our students also get to sharpen research and collaborative skills that will benefit them well into their future careers."
Student selectees have demonstrated superior achievement in math, the sciences, and verbal arts and show potential to become leaders in science. This program provides an opportunity for academically talented high school to become leaders in science, engineering, technology and mathematics.
"Future leaders in these areas are critical to the advancements of the nation's economic development, national security, and global competitiveness," said Kim Day, Chief of Science DoDEA.

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
