DoDEA Announces Three New Superintendent Selections

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) announced the selection of three new superintendents for school districts in North Carolina, Korea and Japan. DoDEA operates 192 schools overseas and 63 schools located on military bases throughout the United States, its territories and Cuba. These schools serve more than 84,000 children of military families.

"A lot is happening within DoDEA to move our organization from 'good enough' to 'great' and these three selections will help us make that happen," said Dr. Shirley Miles, Director, DoDEA. "Each of the selectees brings experience, education and determination to the mission. Our children will be well served by the leadership that these professionals will bring."

Dr. Emily Kyser Marsh was selected as Superintendent of North Carolina District schools. Marsh earned her Doctorate of Education from Auburn University, Ala., her Master's of Education Degree from the University of Texas, EI Paso, Texas, and her Bachelor's of Science in Education also from Auburn.

Marsh has more than 35 years of experience in education, with many of those years spent serving children of military members both in the United States and overseas. Prior to this selection, Marsh served as the Assistant Superintendent for Fort Bragg in DoDEA's North Carolina District.

"I'm committed to supporting military children and their families, ensuring all students the best possible educational program," said Marsh. "It is an honor to have the opportunity to work with students, staff and families as the North Carolina District Superintendent."

Clayton Fujie was selected as the Superintendent of Japan District schools. Originally from Hawaii, Fujie has held many positions within the field of education at schools in Hawaii. His most recent position was with Hawaii's Department of Education where he served for the last eight years as the State Deputy Superintendent of Education.

Fujie earned his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii and his Bachelor's Degree from Willamette University, in Salem OR.

"As a former teacher, principal, complex area superintendent and deputy superintendent, I understand and support continuous improvement in our education system to meet and exceed the needs of our students," said Fujie. "I believe every adult in the school can be a positive role model and mentor to our children to help them grow and learn. Whether your work is as a custodian, school clerk, teacher, or principal, we can all make a difference in our own way.

Dr. Irby Miller was selected to be the Superintendent of Schools for Korea. Dr. Miller earned his Doctorate of Education Degree in 2000 from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Prior to this assignment he was the President and CEO of I.L. Miller Enterprises LLC, a training and development consulting firm aimed at providing management and leadership development to mid-level and senior management in school systems, private organizations, and corporate entities. Dr. Miller brings to the Korea School District 38 years experience as an Area Superintendent, Director, Principal and teacher of English.

"My educational belief is all children can learn and all children will learn if given a strategic plan of action to follow," Miller said. "I look forward to serving all stakeholders in my new capacity.

All of the Superintendents will be in place for the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year."

DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for Department of Defense (DoD) dependents who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality, public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, the United States, Cuba, Guam and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Education Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
