I grew on a personal level finding qualities and capabilities which had never surfaced back at home. I felt a sense of happiness just knowing I had the ability to interact intellectually and socially with scholars from around the world.

Research Science Institute 2009

DoDEA will sponsor three students-one from DoDDS-Europe, DoDDS-Pacific, and DDESS-to attend the 2009 Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is a 6-week residential summer program during which participants work under the mentorship of eminent scientists and researchers. The institute will take place on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from June 21 to August 1, 2009. It is sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) in collaboration with MIT. Expenses for lodging and meals are included as part of the RSI Program. DoDEA will pay for travel.

Students selected to participate in RSI will experience college-level classes taught by distinguished professors from leading universities. Classes are designed to sharpen students' research skills as they complete hands-on research guided by mentors from corporations, universities and research organizations.

RSI is open to students who have completed the third year of high school by the summer of 2009. Students need to provide evidence of their leadership potential in science and mathematics and an ability to lead in community and school activities. The selection of students is based on the following criteria:

  • Written essay responses to questions detailing goals in science and/or math
  • Recommendations by two teachers familiar with the student and his/her academic record
  • Copy of the transcript of the student's high school academic record
  • Demonstrated superior achievement in math, the sciences, and writing/presentation skills.
  • PSAT math and verbal scores showing evidence of exceptional potential. It is recommended that math PSAT scores be at least 75 and combined math and verbal PSAT scores be at least 140.

Students may obtain more information about RSI as well as an application form on the Center for Excellence in Education's website http://www.cee.org . In addition, DoDEA has a website which contains useful information pertaining to RSI (www.dodea.edu/students/rsi.cfm ). Interested students should download the online application, complete it, and submit it to their principal. Principals will ensure that the completed applications are sent to the Area Deputy Directors who will facilitate selections at the Area level. The deadline for submitting applications to the Area is January 13, 2010.

The RSI Selection Committee will make the final selections. Notification for the selected participants will be forthcoming from DoDEA HQ and RSI. Please direct any questions about the Research Science Institute to Kim Day, who may be reached by email (kim.day@hq.dodea.edu) or by phone (703-588-3126).
