DoDEA proudly announces the selection of Mrs. Mary Hansen as the 2016 Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Hansen was selected as New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico's District Teacher of the Year this spring and serves as a Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) teacher and instructional coach at Crossroads Elementary School, Marine Corps Base Quantico. She was selected from the 14 District Teachers of the Year.
Mary is known as a lifelong learner with an extraordinary passion for teaching, learning, and leading when working with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and stakeholders throughout the community. Known for her active engagement of her students, Mrs. Hansen ignites her students' interest in STEM by creating learning opportunities that are challenging, meaningful, and relevant. She believes that teachers must embrace change, encourage innovation, and foster creativity; not just in their students, but in themselves. She sets high standards, continuously rises to difficult challenges, and leads and inspires the way for others.
Mrs. Hansen will enter into The National Teacher of the Year program sponsored by the Council of Chief State Schools Officers (CCSSO) and will be among 56 other participants for the prestigious honor.
We congratulate Mrs. Hansen and all of our 14 District Teachers of the Year for their commitment to their school communities.
The DoDEA Teacher of the Year Program recognizes and promotes excellence in education. The DoDEA teacher advances to compete with teachers from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the DoDEA, for the title of National Teacher of the Year.
The National Teacher of the Year (NTOY) Program began in 1952 and continues as the oldest, most prestigious national honors program that focuses public attention on excellence in teaching. The NTOY is chosen from among the State Teachers of the Year by a National Selection Committee representing the major national education organizations. Each April, the NTOY is introduced to the American people by the President of the United States.
