Students are expected to engage in communication with the DVHS teacher and peers in a variety of ways to support instruction within the online course. Communication with peers using instant messaging and discussion boards allow students to share ideas and reflect and modify their own understanding of concepts.

Each DVHS course is composed of students from all over the world. Because of this, DVHS teachers may not be located in the same geographic region as each of their students. DVHS teachers are located in either Sembach, Germany; Okinawa, Japan; or Quantico, Virginia and serve students worldwide.
