Gordon ES Staff Report
Cameron NC | November 7, 2017
Students and faculty of Gordon Elementary School honored veterans 8:30 a.m. Nov. 7, 2017, at the flagpole in front of the school. The ceremony began with opening remarks by Principal Dr. Lisa McGee. Following her comments, the flag team raised and lowered the flag to half-staff while students, faculty, and visitors sang the national anthem.
Fifth grade teacher and U.S. Air Force retiree John Fields was the guest speaker. In his remarks, he gave students a brief history lesson about Veterans Day, reminding everyone that although it was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities on the Western Front during World War I, the holiday was renamed and expanded to pay tribute to all veterans.
Fields explained to students that although they may not always be able to recognize veterans just by how they look, veterans can be easily recognized by the quality of their character and by their selfless actions.
Music teacher and U.S. Army retiree, Michael Flagg led students in singing the various service songs, and invited veterans from that branch of service to join in. Veterans in attendance were from the Air Force, Army and Marine Corps.
