DoDEA Shifts School Openings Dates at Benning & Stewart

PEACHTREE CITY, GA. — August 7, 2020 — PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Director has approved the shifting of school openings at schools in Fort Benning and Fort Stewart, Georgia, to allow additional time for staff changes to support the new virtual learning option. The decision was made in close coordination with installation commanders, the local senior military leadership, and DoDEA Southeast District and DoDEA Americas Regional leadership.

"The Southeast District is committed to continue to deliver quality instruction to our students,” said Mr. Gregory Bull, the DoDEA Southeast District Chief of Staff. “The shift in the calendar will allow us more time to continue to coordinate with DoDEA Headquarters in order to make staffing changes to support all students participating in the various learning options."

The 2020-2021 school year will look different across DoDEA as our schools reopen in a “new normal” environment due to COVID-19, if local health protection conditions (HPCON) allow for it. School staff at Fort Benning and Fort Stewart will report August 17, and students will begin in remote learning on August 24.

As per current Department of Defense guidance, if an installation is in health protection condition (HPCON) Charlie, schools will be closed to students, and schools will begin the year in remote learning. Both of these installations are in HPCON C. In remote learning, students receive the classroom curriculum from their assigned brick and mortar teacher, through digital programs.
