PEACHTREE CITY, GA — December 13, 2019 — Dr. Youlanda Washington, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Kentucky Community Superintendent, has selected Mrs. Michelle Brandt as the assistant principal for Mahaffey Middle School at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Mrs. Brandt is a veteran, who served as a medic in the United States Army. Before becoming a DoDEA teacher, Mrs. Brandt served as a long-term substitute teacher at Northeast and Kenwood Middle Schools in Clarksville, Tennessee. She began her career with DoDEA, serving as a sixth-grade math teacher at Wassom Middle School on Fort Campbell, Kentucky in 2004. During this time, she was selected as Wassom’s ‘Teacher of the Year’ and served as a continuous school improvement co-chair, the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) team member and sixth-grade team leader. Mrs. Brandt has also taught math, social studies, and research in sixth and seventh grades. For the last three years, she has been at Mahaffey Middle School teaching seventh-grade math and sixth-grade research.
Mrs. Brandt earned an undergraduate degree in education and her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Austin Peay State University.
“After serving in the Army, I decided to pursue teaching because as a military child, my family moved around a great deal,” said Brandt. “School was the only place that was a constant. I felt that becoming a teacher would be a way to give back to the community that had given me so much.”
Mrs. Brandt was born in Savanna, Illinois, and is the daughter of an Army service member. She is married to Scott Brandt, who retired as a Combat Engineer from the United States Army. They have two children, Ethan and Ayden. As a family, they enjoy fishing and other fun outdoor activities.
