FORT BUCHANAN, PUERTO RICO — August 25, 2021 — Dr. Jacob Sherwood, the Department of Defense Education Activity community superintendent for Fort Buchanan and Ramey, is pleased to announce Jared Collins as the new principal for Antilles Middle School at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico.
Jared Collins has proven to be a successful educator during his time in DoDEA. He has served as an assistant principal at Naples Elementary School for the last four years.
“In addition to a successful track record as an assistant principal and many years of experience in the classroom, Mr. Collins also brings high energy and a positive disposition with him,” Dr. Sherwood explained. “His experience overseas serving military connected students and their families as a teacher and as an administrator will help him to hit the ground running at Antilles Middle School. I’m certain that he will continue to engage our families and stakeholders in the process of continuous school improvement and focus on the ongoing academic improvement for all our students. We look forward to Mr. Collins and his incoming leadership at the middle school.”
Collins is excited to be joining the Antilles Middle School community. He began his career in education as an elementary school teacher in California and Utah. He has been with DoDEA since 2001 and has served in various locations, including Yokosuka, Japan; Lakenheath, England; Camp Humphreys, Korea; Sigonella, Italy; and Naples, Italy. He has experience working with elementary schoolchildren from kindergarten through sixth grade.
His teaching experience also includes English language proficiency for students who have a second language influence, often called English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL; Spanish immersion; foreign language in elementary school; literacy support specialist; and READ 180, a program focused on reading and language arts skills of older, struggling readers. He has held several leadership roles, including acting administrator, continuous school improvement chairperson, grade level chair, labor union representative and SAC co-chair.
Collins and his wife Rebecca are the proud parents of four children between the ages of 16 and 25, three of which have graduated from DoDEA schools. They also have two granddaughters. In his spare time, Collins is active in church, and he enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and watching good movies. He looks forward to collaborating with Antilles Middle School staff, parents and community members — through positive and frequent communication — as we seek to educate, engage and empower military-connected students to succeed in a dynamic world.
