Welcome from the Community Superintendent, KY Community

Youlanda Cumings Washington is the Kentucky Community Superintendent, responsible for the Fort Campbell and Fort Knox Schools. Dr. Washington, a graduate of Fort Knox High School, counts it an honor and a privilege to serve the military-connected students, parents and staff of the Kentucky Community Schools at Fort Campbell and Ft Knox.

Dr. Washington’s education includes a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master’s of Arts and a Rank I from Western Kentucky University. In 2002, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from University of Louisville. In 2004, she was awarded the Morphet Dissertation Award for the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year. Dr. Washington’s dissertation, titled “Women in School Leadership: A Study of Female Superintendents in Kentucky,” focused on the role of a superintendent and the role of women in leadership.

Dr. Washington began her career as a sixth grade teacher at Macdonald Middle School, where she taught for 16 years and served as the speech and debate coach. In 1992, she became principal of Pierce Elementary School at Fort Knox. In 2003, she was selected by the Kentucky Department of Education to serve in the Kentucky Minority Superintendent Internship program as an assistant superintendent in Oldham County Schools, Buckner, Kentucky. Dr. Washington returned to Fort Knox in 2004 as the principal of Macdonald Intermediate School. In 2013, she was transferred to Scott Middle School, where she served as principal.

In addition to [43-?] years of experience as a teacher and administrator, Dr. Washington has several publications to her credit. She has authored several articles related to quality management and quality leadership and produced educational videos focused on cooperative learning. Her publications have been presented at the American Educational Research Association (AREA) conferences and published in the Journal of Women in Educational Leadership.

Dr. Washington is married to Joe I. Washington, Jr. They have two sons and one daughter-in-law, Joe (Tisha) and Kevin, and three grandchildren. She enjoys writing and, in addition to her educational publications, has authored several books.
