Get Involved

Research demonstrates that parent involvement is essential for student success. Although you may not become involved in all committees and support organizations in the school, we encourage the following activities for your parental support:

  • Join the school parent/teacher organization (PTO or PTA) and participate in meetings and activities.
  • Have lunch at school with your child regularly.
  • Volunteer in your child's classroom.
  • Establish a daily study time at home (even when there's no homework).
  • Participate in the Continuous School Improvement (CSI) efforts at your child's school.
  • Keep informed of school events and activities by reading school newsletters and your child's classroom newsletter.
  • Communicate frequently with your child's teacher.
  • Prepare for and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Ensure your child has a well-balanced breakfast and comes to school with completed homework, lunch money and school supplies.

To volunteer for a one-day school event, such as a Book Fair or Picture Day, ask your school's office for a Volunteer Request Form.  Complete the form and return it to the school office.

All other volunteers follow the process for becoming a Fort Knox school volunteer which includes:

  1. Completing the forms found in the Fort Knox Schools Volunteer Packet and returning them to Room 14 of the Central Staff Offices.
  2. Receiving a favorable criminal background clearance (CBC)
  3. Registering with the Volunteer Information Management System (VMIS)

Note: State pupil transportation regulations, which the bus contractor must follow, do not allow for a one-day event exception for those interested in chaperoning a study trip or field trip. Such trips, aboard buses, require submitting the FKCS Volunteer Packet and having background checks performed.

Note to volunteer coaching applicants: Please phone the Fort Knox High School Athletic Director at 502-624-5332 to make an appointment for a meeting before you complete the volunteer application packet.

Fort Knox Schools Volunteer Packet

  • The required forms and instructions for completing them are included in the packet document.
  • Bring your completed packet to the Executive Services Office, Room 14, in Crittenberger Central Staff Offices, Bldg. 4553, located next door to the Patton Museum at 281 Fayette Avenue.  Please call before you make the trip to the Crittenberger to assure the specialist is available to review and accept your packet.
  • Call us at 502-624-2345, ext.4114 if you have specific questions about the forms or the process.
  • You will be contacted by telephone or e-mail once your clearance results are received.
  • A volunteer clearance is authorized for two years, at which time you must complete a new application packet.

Parental Questions and Concerns

Parents who have questions and/or concerns are requested to resolve them at the most appropriate and immediate level. For typical classroom matters, the following procedures should apply in order as needed:

  • Step 1- The parent discusses the matter with the teacher.
  • Step 2- The parent and teacher meet with the principal if the matter is not resolved in step 1.
  • Step 3- Those matters which cannot be resolved at the school level are referred to the KY District Superintendent's Office.

These procedures follow the correct chain-of-command/line of authority from teacher to principal to superintendent and focus on resolution at the lowest level. Parents are encouraged to seek immediate resolution of problems. Prompt action can frequently prevent complications and more serious problems later on.

DoDEA Americas School Boards

Being a DoDEA Americas school board member is a serious responsibility but one that offers significant rewards - the primary reward being the opportunity to actively participate in the process of educating our children.

However, unlike the school boards in the Local Education Authority (LEA), DoDEA Americas school boards act purely in an advisory capacity, providing input to the Superintendent and administrators in the areas of fiscal, personnel and educational policies, procedures and programs. The DoDEA Americas school district superintendent makes final decisions on matters affecting the school district.  Read more about the responsibilities of a DoDEA Americas School Board.
