Ms. Sheila Gilliard was named Principal of Brewster Middle School in September 2016. She comes to DoDEA Americas from the Moore County Schools in North Carolina, where she served as an Assistant Principal of North Moore High School.
Ms. Gilliard, a native of Fayetteville, NC, began her career as a Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at the middle school level. She then taught English and Civics at a high school. After completing an administrative internship from 2005 to 2006, she served as Assistant Principal of John Griffin Middle School in the Cumberland County School District from 2006 to 2009, then as Principal of the J.W. McLaughlin Elementary School, in the Hoke County Schools, in Raeford, NC, from 2009-2015, before going to North Moore High School.
"Ms. Sheila Gilliard is a visionary and innovative leader, with twenty-five years of experience at all grade levels," said Mr. Todd Curkendall, Community Superintendent, Camp Lejeune Schools. "Her record of leading high performing schools is truly impressive and we are excited to begin the journey under her leadership."
While Ms. Gilliard was Principal at J.W. McLaughlin Elementary School, the school was named a School of High Growth for three of her four years there. She was a Moore County Schools Principal of the Year nominee in 2015 and received the Distinguished Leadership in Practice award in 2013.
She earned her Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master's Degree in Reading Education and a Master's Degree in School Administration, both from Fayetteville State University. Ms. Gilliard was a military wife and now widow of the late Capt. Ronald K. Gilliard. She has one grown daughter, Danielle K. Gilliard.
Mr. Michael Starrett is excited to be named the current Assistant Principal of Brewster Middle School.
Prior to assignment as Assistant Principal at Brewster, Mr. Starrett served as Assistant Principal at Heroes Elementary School from 2016 – 2021. During this time, Heroes was recognized as 2020 National Blue Ribbon School for Exemplary academic achievement and a North Carolina Purple Star School recognizing the military families focused schools. Mr. Starrett served as the Acting Principal from May 2017 until August of 2018 due to the long-term leave of Mrs. Linda Shriner. Mrs. Shriner retired in March of 2018.
Mr. Starrett also served as Assistant Principal at Johnson Primary School from 2014 – 2016; Instructional Systems Specialist for Education Technology, Student Information Systems and Webmaster for the North Carolina District including both Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg from 2009-2014 and Principal of Tarawa Terrace II Elementary School from 2006-2009. Mr. Starrett moved to Camp Lejeune from Fort Benning, Georgia where he was Assistant Principal at Faith Middle School and Stowers Elementary School from 1997-2006. Mr. Starrett began his educational career at Fort Bragg as a 4th, 5th, and 7th grade teacher as well as one of the first school Education Technologists.
Mr. Starrett is a 1981 graduate of DoDEA’s Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan where his father taught for 28 of his 36 years in education. He is a Graduate of Fayetteville State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education and Campbell University with a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision. He is currently a student pursuing an Education Specialist degree at Liberty University.
Mr. Starrett believes that relationships with students, staff and families are at the heart of education. Strong connections between teacher and student; teachers and families; administration and all stake-holders are critical to the success of children’s education. Working together to support students underpins student excellence.
Mr. Starrett is an Air Force veteran having served at Osan Air Base, South Korea with the 38th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron and at Fort Bragg, NC with Det. 3, 5th Weather Squadron (Airborne) as a member of the 7th Special Forces Group (ABN) Special Operations Weather Team. Mr. Starrett resides in Hampstead with his wife Jennifer. They have twin boys, Cameron and Connor who are students at East Carolina University and Dakota State University.
