The Counselor's Corner

The goal of your Brewster Middle School counselors is to work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers/staff and the community, in support of student academic and personal/social growth. We support all students in acquiring the attitude, knowledge and interpersonal skills necessary to advance academic outcomes and achieve future goals.

Focus of the Counseling Services

The Counseling Program at Brewster Middle School stresses student development in three major areas: academic achievement, career awareness/educational planning, and personal and social growth.

Academic Achievement and Planning
  1. Identify programs available to students and the requirements for participation in these programs
  2. Help students adjust to the school.
  3. Help students with time-management and organization.
  4. Consult with teachers on ways to improve student academic achievement.
  5. Support Students in self-advocacy both within and outside of the classroom
Personal and Social Development
  1. Help students discover their strengths and weaknesses in relation to school performances.
  2. Help students use their problem-solving and conflict resolution techniques.
  3. Help with conflict management and interpersonal relationships.
  4. Support students in self-advocacy both within and outside of the classroom.
Individual Counseling

Counselors meet with students in a one-on-one capacity when the student or an adult requests a meeting. These meetings are confidential (unless safety is a concern) and are to discuss issues such as academics, problem solving, goal setting, personal problems affecting school and other issues that may be impacting student learning. Counseling sessions are generally brief, but a counselor may suggest parents seek on-going counseling with a counseling professional in the community. School counselors are not licensed therapist and therefore we do not provide long-term counseling to students.

Group Counseling

Small groups are formed when a common need surfaces for a small group of students. Some examples include: resolving a conflict among a group of students, academic success tips and tools, adjusting to middle school, etc. Participating in small groups can help students relate with other students who have similar challenges.

Counseling Service Delivery BMS

As leaders, as well as team members working with teachers, administrators and other school personnel to ensure each student's success, counselors often serve as liaisons to other academic and community support resources, as necessary. Counselors deliver their program in various ways. Responsive counseling services are provided in individual and group settings when students need help in any of the three areas of emphasis. The student, parent, or member of the staff who sees the need for a particular issue to be addressed may initiate these services.

Counselors also meet with individual students to help them make decisions about career and educational planning. Another vehicle, group counseling, provides systematic large-scale instruction for all students at the middle level. Counselors plan with teachers and then teach specific objectives. This professional teamwork gives teachers the necessary resources to reinforce (in their content areas) the appropriate objectives.

Counselors support the overall school program by designing and coordinating activities necessary for the effective implementation of the school's comprehensive guidance program. Such activities include, but are not limited to, anti-bullying and suicide prevention lessons, cyber safety seminars, participation on interdisciplinary teams to determine special services for students, and providing for the academic placement of students in classes.
