Dexter Students Go on a Trip Around the World with Reading

NEA Sponsors Special Reading Event

Books on Africa adorn a table at the Dexter Global Book Tasting

On Friday, March 2nd, 2018 Dexter Elementary students participated in a Global Book Tasting Event.

Students look through books at the Global Book Tasting Event

The event was organized by Dexter’s Gifted teacher Ms. B. and funded by a grant from NEA.  Through the grant, Dexter’s Gifted teacher was able to purchase books featuring countries and cultures from around the world.  The event coincided with Dexter's Read Across America festivities.

Students gather around tables at the Global Book tasting.

The books were arranged by continent and each station was decorated with cultural items from different countries within that continent.  Students were allowed to rotate to each of the six stations.  While at each station, students received a stamp in their “passport.”  They also received a small snack from one of the countries in that continent.

Students write in passports at the Global Book Tasting

The passports were used to record interesting facts about the countries.  They also used the passport to record whether or not they enjoyed the snack and how it tasted.

Students dress in international attire for the Global Book Tasting

Teachers at each station informed the students about their continent and explained some of the cultural items on display.  Faculty and students were also invited to dress in international attire for the occasion.  After the event, the books were made available for additional viewing in the Dexter Elementary library.

Dexter Elementary School would like to thank the National Education Association, as well as everyone who brought in cultural items, volunteered and participated in this very special reading event!
