This week in the school spotlight is Gina Bailey, custodian at Heroes Elementary School (HES) on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

Bailey has been working in the school system for 22 years and has spent eight years with HES.

Bailey graduated from Jacksonville High School.

Q. What encouraged you to pursue a career in the education system?

A. I have always wanted to work with children.

Q. What is your favorite part of your job?

A. Making the school a sanitary and safe environment for the children.

Q. What drives your passion to work with children each day?

A. Seeing the pride the children take in their school each school year.

Q. What is a lesson you have learned from your time in the education system?

A. With a positive attitude anything is possible.

Q. What advice would you give to upcoming/new school staff members?

A. Take pride in your work and you will be fine.

Q. What are three words that would describe your life outside of the school? (hobbies, interests, etc.)

A. Grandkids, landscaping, vacationing

Q. What is a favorite memory from your career?

A. Numerous field events.

Q. What advice would you give to parents of the grades you work around?

A. Teach the importance of washing your hands.

Q. Are there any changes would you like to see implemented in the school system within the next 5 years?

A. Revisiting hiring practices to make the hiring go faster.

Q. What are the biggest challenges you face as a staff member in a military town?

A. A constant turnover of quality staff members.

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to share about working in the education system?

A. Having adequate staff makes the school system run smoother.
