Spring is in the Air

E Huey

The Elliott families converged for a fun filled evening of making, talking and learning during
March’s Family Night. Parents are a child’s first and most influential teachers. Parent
involvement is the number one predictor of early literacy success and future academic
achievement.  Despite the winter weather like conditions, families showed up for the spring
themed event which included a kite and flower making station. By following 3 or more step
directions, families displayed their creative sides by designing visually appealing kites and
flowers. Next families visited a favorite honey hole at Elliott to fish for word endings. The
students reeled in their best catches to make new words. Great excitement also happened as the families watched their caterpillars “grow” as they made word families. Many students enjoyed the Ladybug math as they got to count and make ladybugs out of playdough for their leaves and tens frames. Several families then took it a step further by creating math problems to be solved with the ladybugs. Finally, books were read to learn more about spring. These collaborating activities lead to families working together to successfully complete all of the offered activities.
