Keep the Gingerbread Man Dry

Throughout December the Kindergarteners at Elliott Elementary School designed and created boats and rafts for The Gingerbread Man for their S.T.E.M. project. The goal was to develop a craft from assorted materials that would keep The Gingerbread Man dry and carry him across “to the other side of the river.”  The Kindergarteners worked in collaborative groups and followed the Engineering Design (ASK, IMAGINE, PLAN, CREATE, and IMPROVE) to get their sweet pastry across the river.  As they stepped through the process to create their boats or rafts, they kept coming back to the goal “keep the Gingerbread Man dry”.  Some groups took it a step further and tested to see how many gingerbread people their vessel would hold and still stay afloat. After testing, the students reflected on the results and how they could improve on their boat or raft designs.  Exhibits of the projects will be displayed in the spring during Elliott’s annual STEMPOSIUM.
