Day one of the two-day regional meet was preliminaries. The top 16 in each event made it to day two—the finals. The top two in each event would automatically qualify for state.
On the girls' side of the Eagles' swim team some achieved personal bests, but fell short in qualifying for state. Freshman and team captain Kayleigh Kopp, placed 10th overall in the region in the 50-yard free with a time of 29.23 seconds and fifth overall in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.87, which was a personal best for her.
The girls' 200-freestyle relay team of Ivette Villapando, Emily Rich, Angeline DeJesus and Kayleigh placed 10th overall in the region with a personal best time of 2:11.53.
The boys' swim team also achieved personal bests, and some automatically qualified for state. The boys' 200-yard medley relay team of Christian Acevedo, Jarrod Reiter, Juan Acevedo and Noah Kopp qualified for state by placing second in their region. They also broke the school record with a time of 1:46.09. The alternates for the boys' 200-medley relay team for state will be John Vogel, Luis Sartor, Jacob Dukavas and Joseph Daniel.
The boys' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Christian, Reiter, Juan and Noah qualified for state by placing second in their region with a time of 3:32.53. The alternates for the boys' 400-yard freestyle relay team for state will be Vogel, Gabriel Brown, Joshua Daniel and James.
The three Eagles from the boys' team who qualified individually for state were Christian, Reiter and Juan. Christian, a senior, qualified individually for state in the 100-yard freestyle by placing second with a time of 51.15. Reiter, a junior, qualified individually for state by placing second with a time of 23.33. Juan, a senior, qualified individually for state in the 100-yard butterfly by placing first with a time of 55.44, and first in the 50-yard freestyle in which he broke his own school record with a time 22.76. Vogel, a freshman, placed ninth overall in the region in the 200-yard individual medley by swimming a personal best with a time of 2:39.68. He was close to breaking a minute in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.83. He placed 13th in the race.
The boys' team will travel Friday to Ralph Wright Natatorium located at the University of Louisville and their fellow Eagles' teammates Juan, Christian, Reiter and Noah. These four Eagles will be competing in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championship.
