Ramey School junior Sebastian P., who captured 1st place in the category of individual senior documentary at the Puerto Rico National History Day contest in April, has been selected to present his video at the National Museum of African American History Documentary Showcase as part of the NHD National Contest. The video is entitled "Temporary Heroes: African Americans in World War One." It tells the story of how African American citizens, in the throes of Jim Crow segregation at the turn of the century, enlisted by the millions in an effort to "prove their worth as equal citizens." Sebastian investigated the topic throughout the year, gathering primary and secondary sources to arrive at his thesis. He argues that their efforts to promote equality were rebuked by both the army during the war and by white society upon their return home. The original documentary video, which is just under 10 minutes in length, will air at the NMAAH in Washington DC on Wed, June 12 at 1:45 pm. Sebastian will also be entering the video for consideration at the National Contest in the general category of Individual Documentary and in the special prize categories of World War One history and African American history.
