What Do You Do with an Idea?

Mrs. Velazquez’s third grade class learned by experience how an idea can take life after reading the book, “What Do You Do with an Idea” by Kobi Yamada. The students wanted to know what if a book were to be written about surviving Hurricane Maria, 2017. They were familiar with the “I Survived” series of books, written by Lauren Tarshis, so they decided to ask her if she would add “I Survived Hurricane Maria” to her series! The students exchanged emails, letters, and packages with Mrs. Tarshis, and after much planning and anticipation were finally able to video chat with her on November 1, 2018. She answered their questions about the “I Survived” series and her work as an author. They were surprised to learn that Mrs. Tarshis had struggled as a young reader. The students shared their favorite “I Survived” moments from her stories and were so very excited to have met the real live author of stories they know and love. Mrs. Tarshis left them with these words of advice, "The most important advice I can offer is that writing is a craft that you can learn by practicing. If you keep writing, you will improve.” Hopes are high that Mrs. Tarshis will be able visit Ramey School in the future and enjoy the island of Puerto Rico.
