WestPoint, NY | November 8, 2018
West Point Middle School’s Speech and Debate Club hosted its first public speaking contest on October 25, 2018. Seven contestants analyzed the honor codes of both West Point Middle School and the United States Military Academy, and delivered speeches regarding the integral part that these honor codes play within the culture of the larger West Point community. Two members of the U.S. Military Academy’s debate team volunteered to judge the event, and students from WPMS’ AVID class captured the top three awards in the competition.
In November, the Speech and Debate Club will host a debate on the efficacy and/or need for homework, while December will provide another public speaking opportunity on a topic to be announced by mid-November.
Participation in Speech and Debate events are open to all students in grades 5-8.
