Nearly 120 students completed a six-week Project Based Learning assignment that required them to create a “Town of Fort Bragg” picture book, said Sarai Maull, an HPS kindergarten teacher. To do so, they had to take note of their homes, as well as of the units and landmarks surrounding their homes. The picture book includes a likeness of Iron Mike, the 17th Calvary Regiment footprint, Womack Army Medical Center and neighborhoods such as Hammond Hills, Nijmegen, St. Mere Eglise and Normandy Heights. Students used BBOT (a programmable robot) for collaboration and problem solving skills. They built a floor-sized model of the town that included a representation of their principal, Priscilla Joiner. The work enabled students to learn skills relating to 2D and 3D shapes and color recognition.
