An alumna of West Point Middle School’s first AVID class, 2006-2007, visited the current class of AVID students on November 27th as a guest speaker to share the impact of AVID on her life and college experience. She completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science at the University of Buffalo, and plans to continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree in nutritional science. She emphasized the importance of AVID strategies in preparing students for the rigor and pace of college, to include: Organization of time and materials, Goal Setting, the Cornell Note-making system, and Collaborative Study Groups (tutorials).
The AVID elective, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college-prep class offered to 7th and 8th grade students at WPMS. Interested students should contact the guidance counselor, or they may stop by room 218 to meet the AVID teacher.
