Ft. Benning | November 29, 2018
On Friday, November 16th Ft. Benning firefighters visited with Dexter Kindergarteners to demonstrate how different materials in a firefighter’s uniform help protect them on the job. The presentation was connected to topics that the students were studying in science and STEM. The presenters explained to the students that different kinds of fabric are called textiles. They went over each of the materials that make up their uniform from the special fire-resistant NOMEX outer layer to the inner water barriers that help keep a firefighter dry while fighting a blaze. They also got to view a special cloth mask that is used to protect a firefighter’s ears and neck, special pants, boots and a helmet.
Dexter Elementary would like to thank the Ft. Benning Fire Department and the DoDEA Southeast District Office for arranging the visit.
