Let's Explore Math Problem Solving at the Fort Jackson Commissary!
A problem solver is someone who questions, investigates, and explores solutions to problems; demonstrates the ability to stick with a problem to find a solution (growth mindset) ; understands that there may be different ways to arrive at an answer; considers many different answers to a problem; and applies math to everyday situations and uses it successfully.
One of the most important ways we can improve math problem solving is to make learning fun and relevant! What better way to see how math is used on a daily basis, than to visit the grocery store and use those skills to problem solve while shopping!
The partnership between C.C. Pinckney Elementary School and the Fort Jackson Commissary has been ongoing for 5 years now. This partnership works to offer Fort Jackson students and families a place to work together and apply math skills in a fun, friendly, and above all, authentic learning environment.
C.C. Pinckney Elementary School has developed a standards based, problem solving Math packet, for all participants to work through while shopping. Special attention was given to differentiation of math standards. Math packets were given to families as they entered the Commissary.
C.C. Pinckney faculty and staff, Garrison Commander Col. Elder and his wife, and C.C. Pinckney’s Support Battalion, HHBN 17 (Military Police), were spread throughout the store to offer students’ and family’s assistance. All participants earned a small prize for coming out, which was provided by the CCP, PTO.
C.C. Pinckney Elementary School students and staff, would like to thank the Fort Jackson Commissary staff, Garrison Commander, Col. Elder and support battalion, HHBN 17, for being such wonderful hosts and helpers!
It was an evening filled with learning, fun, and math problem solving! A community partnership, at its finest!!!
