SEMBACH, GERMANY — May 13, 2021 — DoDEA-Europe’s Charlotte Geehreng has been selected as Overseas School Health Nurses Association (OSHNA) 2021 Nurse of the Year.As the nurse at DoDEA's Brussels American School (BAS) in Brussels, Belgium, Ms. Geehreng has provided care for students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade students at BAS for the last three years.
Ms. Geehreng is described as an energetic person who is viewed as the “central hub” in her school offering stability, connection and engagement with not only her students and staff, but with key community stakeholders as well. Nurse Geehreng, as her staff and students refer to her, is at the helm of many of the school’s customer-centered school reforms resulting in optimal COVID communication plan.
Ms. Geehreng holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and currently working on a Masters of Health Administration from the University of Cincinnati.As a nurse in the U.S. Air Force she worked in the emergency room, telemetry, same-day care, neonatal intensive care and flight nursing.
OSHNA is a professional organization supporting school nurses employed outside the continental United States. OSHNA is an affiliate of the National Association of School Nurses and was created to optimize the health and academic success of students by advancing the role of the professional school nurse.
DoDEA plans, directs, coordinates, and manages Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade education programs for school-aged children of Department of Defense personnel who would otherwise not have access to a high-quality public education. DoDEA schools are located in Europe, the Pacific, Western Asia, the Middle East, Cuba, the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. DoDEA also provides support and resources to Local Educational Activities throughout the U.S. that serve children of military families.
