Heroes ES: Clubs & Activities

Heroes Elementary provides enriching opportunities for students. The following are activities and clubs that students can be involved in before and after school.

  • Eligibility: Boys in Grades 3-5

  • Sponsors: Ms. Brown and Ms. Reed

  • Meeting Time: 2 days a week in the Fall for an hour after school.

  • STRIDE is a fun running program for boys that meets twice a week for 10 weeks after school. STRIDE utilizes games and group activities to teach running, impact health concepts, and help develop excellent character. During the 10 weeks, the curriculum covers topics that are designed to help develop excellent character. STRIDE ends with the team running in a 5K. 

Girls On The Run
  • Eligibility: Girls in Grades 3 to 5

  • Sponsors: Ms. Brown and Ms. Reed

  • Meeting Time: 2 days a week in the spring for an hour after school.

  • Girls on the Run is an after school activity that teaches girls how to live a healthy lifestyle on the inside and outside. The girls will have a lesson each practice and then participate in running activities.  The girls will run a 5k at the end of the season to celebrate their new healthy lifestyles! 

Eagle Eye News
  • Eligibility: All students K-5 who return a signed Live Broadcast Permission Slip

  • Sponsors: Ms.Kim and Ms. Kohkemper

  • Meeting Time: Every morning 8:05-8:40

  • Heroes Elementary School has a Live Video Broadcast called Eagle Eye News. This Broadcast is live-streamed through our school’s YouTube Channel which is managed by DODEA. The live show will begin at 8:30 am each school day and every classroom will be tuned in to watch. In addition, the shows will be archived on the YouTube Channel so you can rewatch the broadcast and share the link with others.

    Every K-5 student will have the opportunity to be featured on the daily newscast at least once this school year. In addition, 5th grade students will be trained throughout the year to use the video equipment. 

Flag Team
  • Eligibility: Grade 5 students

  • Sponsor: 5th Grade Teachers

  • Meeting Time: Every morning, 8:15-8:25

  • The Heroes Elementary School flag team is a small group of volunteer 5th grade students.  These students have been nominated by their teachers and the previous year’s flag team members.  These individuals have a sense of citizenship, community service, self-discipline, respect for authority, personal responsibility, leadership, self-esteem and a desire to serve.  After names have been submitted each child is then asked to demonstrate their ability in making military facing movements, their knowledge of the American Flag, and its proper etiquette.  Once the selection of members is established, these students remain on the team until they personally request to no longer serve, transfer or are removed due to inappropriate actions on their part.    

Beautification Club
  • Eligibility: Students in Grade 1-5

  • Sponsors: Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Allnutt

  • Meeting Time: Tuesdays, 3:00-4:00

  • Show your school pride by helping Heroes look beautiful on the inside and outside. The Beautification Club will be involved in maintaining and enhancing many of the school garden spaces, planting bulbs and flowers, working on interior projects to promote school spirit, and more!

Art Club
  • Eligibility: Students in Grades 3-5

  • Sponsor: Ms. Jones

  • Meeting Time: Thursdays, 3:00-4:00

  • Art club focuses on new art techniques and three-dimensional artwork. Because projects will be completed over multiple meeting times, students will need to commit to regular attendance. This club will run through May 2019.

Homework Club
  • Eligibility: Students in Grades 3-5

  • Sponsors: Mrs. Bean and Mrs. Thompson

  • Meeting Time: Mondays and Thursdays, 3:00-4:00

  • Students who need extra support in math and reading are invited to join the Homework Club. Students will be expected to be ready to work. Students will need to have homework that needs to be completed and/or have something specific that they may need help being tutored. Students can attend Monday, Thursday, or BOTH days.

2nd Grade Reading Club
  • Eligibility: Students in Grade 2, nominated by their teacher

  • Sponsor: Ms. Bean

  • Meeting Time: Mondays, 3:00-4:00

  • Students in 2nd grade are nominated by their teacher to join this club that focuses on reading fluency, expression, and comprehension. Students participate in guided reading lessons, as well as buddy reading and word work to increase their reading capabilities.
