Becoming a Substitute Teacher/AVID Tutor/Training Instructor

So you would like to be a Substitute Teacher/AVID Tutor/Training Instructor?


There are many positions in which an individual can serve DoDEA Schools. Individuals with a high school diploma/GED or higher may apply to be a Substitute Teacher, AVID Tutor, or a Training Instructor.  The availability and requirements for these positions vary by Region; please see below for additional information.

Americas Region

  • Substitute Teacher:

    • A Substitute Teacher is a person who teaches a school class when the regular teacher is unavailable.
    • Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university.
    • Applicants must submit a copy of OFFICIAL transcripts.
    • Ft. Campbell and Puerto Rico have two levels:
      • Level 1 (Certified Teacher)
      • Leve 2 (Bachelor’s Degree)
  • Training Instructor:

    • A Training Instructor is a person who teaches a school class when the regular teacher is unavailable.  A Training Instructor paid on a different pay scale than a Substitute Teacher due to the level of education.
    • Applicants must hold a high school diploma or GED but less than a Bachelor’s Degree (e.g., AA, 60 or more semester hours).
    • Ft. Benning has two levels:
      • Level 1 (AA or 60+ college semester hours)
      • Leve 2 (HS Diploma/GED or <60 college semester hours)

Europe and Pacific Region

  • Substitute Teacher

    • A Substitute Teacher is a person who teaches a school class when the regular teacher is unavailable.
    • Applicants must hold, at a minimum, a high school diploma or GED.
  • AVID Tutor

    • An AVID Tutor assists students in the classroom where determined needs exist.
    • Applicants must hold, at a minimum, a high school diploma or GED.
    • To be an AVID Tutor you must first be hired as a Substitute Teacher.

How do I apply?

The following applications forms are required for all Substitute Teacher, AVID Tutor, or a Training Instructor applications:

  • Checklist

    • OF-306, Declaration of Federal Employment.  Please sign and date block 17a only. (Americas Region applicants only sign upon selection for the position.)
    • Resume – Must Include the following:
      • Personnel Information: Full name, mailing address, phone numbers, and email.
      • Education: Institution name, city, state, degree type, and date degree attained.
      • Work/Volunteer experience: Position title, duties and accomplishments, employer’s name and complete address, supervisors name and phone number, and position start and end dates.
      • Other Qualifications: Job-related training courses, skills, certificates, licenses, honors, awards, and special accomplishments.
      • Do not include in your resume: Social Security Number, photos, and classified information.
    • Dual Compensation Act Form
    • Copy of sponsor’s orders, with the applicant's name listed as dependent, and proof of SOFA status.  Applicants must have sofa status. (OCONUS, Guam, Cuba Applicants Only)
  • DoDEA Substitute Teacher, AVID Tutor, and Training Instructor Application - Please open using Internet Explorer or download to your computer and open using Adobe Reader.
    • Fill out the form and select the type of position for which you are applying.

How do I submit my application?

You will need to apply per the instructions below based on your Region.  Please see below for additional information.

Americas

  • In order for your application to be reviewed and processed, you must follow the instructions in the Substitute Teacher/Training Instructor vacancy announcement for the District to which you are applying.

Europe/Pacific

  • In order for your application to be reviewed and processed, you must apply directly to one school which will be considered your “Home” school for pay purposes.  A “Home” school is the school to which you would like to be assigned within your local commuting area, but you can substitute at other schools within the complex as listed on the geographic availability form.
