Sixth Annual Okinawan-American Shootout Basketball Tournament

CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA — January 19, 2012 — January 21st -22nd marks a special weekend for DoDEA Okinawa as they play host to the Sixth Annual Okinawan-American Shootout Basketball Tournament. This pool play tournament will see Kubasaki HS, Kadena HS, and 8 of the best local high school teams competing to advance to the championship games to be held on Sunday, January 22. All tournament play will occur at the Foster Fieldhouse.

“We have the best boys and girls teams on the island and the level of play should be excellent,” according to Fred Bales, Activities Director at Kubasaki High School and Tournament Director. “The tournament is the culmination of months of hard work by a lot of people. We are especially thankful to the American Consulate, the Okinawa Basketball Association, and DoDDS Okinawa for sponsoring the tournament,” added Bales.
Events such as this are a unique opportunity for our students to play against and become friends with host nation students and to celebrate that friendship in sport.

The tournament opening ceremony will be held at 0900 on Saturday. The event will conclude about 1900 on Sunday with a closing ceremony and presentation of awards.

This event was a huge success the past five years and we are looking forward to another great tournament this year. Please join us for this cultural exchange event. Watch the stars of today and tomorrow battle it out in the 6th Annual Okinawan-American Shootout.

Special thanks to Kadena Commissary (DECA), Okinawa Exchange-Camp Foster Anthony’s Pizza and MCCS Semper Fit Athletics for supporting this activity.
