CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA — June 7, 2021 — Todd Curkendall, community superintendent for Camp Lejeune, will retire Wednesday, June 30, after 29 years of service to the Department of Defense Education Activity.
“Mr. Curkendall worked tirelessly on behalf of military-connected children and families for 29 years with the Department of Defense Education Agency,” said Dr. Donato Cuadrado, superintendent for the Department of Defense Education Activity Mid-Atlantic District. “He made the difficult decision to leave Camp Lejeune Community Schools and DoDEA after a protracted period of illness.”
To honor his career, a virtual retirement ceremony is planned for June 23 at 10 a.m. “We, as a school community, look forward to celebrating the career and accomplishment of this dedicated servant leader,” said Dr. Angelique Lamonski, who is chief of staff for the district.
A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Curkendall has been an educator since 1984. He received his bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and his master’s degree from Austin Peay State University. He earned a degree in educational leadership from Western Kentucky University.
He began his career with DoDEA in 1992 as a middle school teacher at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served there as an administrator at the elementary, middle and high school levels, before being named as the superintendent of the Fort Knox Community Schools in 2011.
Curkendall came to North Carolina from Kentucky, where he served as the assistant superintendent of the Kentucky District, prior to the Restructuring for Student Achievement in 2016.
The Camp Lejeune community includes seven schools, which serve students living on post in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
Curkendall and his team fostered collaborations that enriched education at Camp Lejeune. For example, Camp Lejeune Schools have ongoing partnerships with the University of San Diego, Coastal Carolina Community College and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. They collaborate with Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital Early Developmental Intervention Services program; The Immunizations Clinic, Community Health Nurse, Preventive Medicine, and Pediatric Departments at the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune; and the Exceptional Family Member Program Coordinator.
On behalf of everyone at DoDEA Americas, we congratulate Curkendall on his retirement and wish him much happiness.
