The Director's Corner

DoDEA Parents and Students,

Welcome back to a great new school year! Over the past few weeks, 71,000 students across 163 DoDEA Schools began a new chapter in their great academic adventure. The start of a new school year brings wonderful, renewed opportunities to make new friends, discover new interests, and excel in everything you do.

All of us at DoDEA have been working hard over the summer to make sure that everything is in place for this to be our best year yet. I have some exciting updates to share with you.

This year we are unveiling six new or updated facilities as part of our commitment to providing all of our students, across all three of our regions, with a 21st century learning environment. These six facilities are part of a $3.7 billion effort to build or modernize a total of 80 projects between 2010 and 2024. Of those 80 projects, 40 have been completed, 17 are in final design, and 23 are now under construction.

As part of our College and Career Readiness initiative, we have added six additional math courses; we have updated our test assessments for music, art and drama; we have new health education resources aligned to National Health Standards for grades 6-12; we have fully implemented our College and Career Ready Standards for History/Social Studies for grades 6-12; and begun our first year of implementing College and Career Ready Standards for Science for grades 6-12. We are also pleased to announce updated graduation requirements, starting with class of 2023; keep an eye out for more information to come on that subject.

This year will see expanded offerings for our Career and Technical Education program, designed to set our graduates up for success and launch them into the career field of their choice. In addition to our established Career and Technical offerings, such as business, culinary arts, and health, we are adding Teaching as a Profession; and Coding I and II as part of our Cybersecurity and Programming Career Pathways program.

Our teachers are some of the best in the world. I hope you will take the time to get to know all of your teachers this year and work with them closely to reinforce your students’ growth outside of the classroom.

Most of all, I want to thank you for being a part of DoDEA. Our students are at the heart of everything we do. Thank you for helping us achieve our mission of excellence in education for every student, every day, everywhere.
