DVS Letter to Parents Jan 7, 2021

Dear Students, Parents, and Sponsors,

Happy New Year and welcome to DoDEA Virtual School (DVS).  We hope you had a joyful and restful holiday and are ready to start second semester.

All students enrolled with the DVS for second semester will begin class on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 (as Monday is a holiday). Courses will be available to students that morning through the Schoology Learning Management System.

Updated directions to Login to Schoology:

Students should go to http://www.google.com and sign in using their DoDEA Google account. Then go to http://schoology.dodea.edu and click on the DoDEA Google account in the window that appears. You may be prompted to enter the DoDEA Google Account password again.  Once in Schoology, click on Courses at the top of the screen.

Teachers will contact students between January 14th and January 20th.

Because you are new to the program, please contact your local school which will provide you with your DoDEA google email address and your password. You will use that email address and password to log in to your course(s). All classes will be delivered through our Learning Management System, Schoology. Please ensure you use the DoDEA Schoology portal to log in (rather than another Schoology page).

If you have not done so already, you should view the orientation and course demos.

Please use our technology help desk for any virtual school tech issues.

We’re excited to welcome you to our school and look forward to building a partnership.  We greatly appreciate your support as we continue our exciting virtual school journey together!

Dates to Remember:

  • 12 January 2021: First Semester Ends
  • 19 January 2021: Second Semester Begins

DVS Letter to Parents Dec 22, 2020

Dear Students, Parents, and Sponsors,

We hope you are having a warm and restful holiday and are ready to finish with strength! Whether you are enrolled in the supplemental or full time option, this communication provides guidance for the end of the first semester and the beginning of second semester. This guidance applies for those students who are remaining with the DoDEA Virtual School (DVS) for the rest of the year, for those who are returning to full time in-person education with their local school, and for those who are new to the DVS for the second semester.

Dates to Remember:

  • 4 January 2021: 1st Semester courses resume
  • 5-11 January 2021: 1st Semester High School Finals
  • 12 January 2021: 1st Semester student final day
  • 19 January 2021: 2nd Semester begins

Finishing 1st Semester:

Courses resume on 4 January 2021 for all students currently enrolled in the DVS. The final day for all DVS students is 12 January 2021. For High School Students Only: 1st Semester finals are scheduled for 5-11 January 2021. You may choose to take any final on any day within that window. We recommend that you schedule no more than two finals per day. Incompletes or Extensions: Incompletes or extension are rarely provided unless there are extenuating circumstances or emergencies that would prohibit the student from completing the class on time. These situations must be approved by DVS administration. If you believe you have an emergency, please reach out to your course teacher for direction.

Beginning 2nd Semester:

All students enrolled with the DVS for 2nd semester will begin class on Tuesday, 19 January 2021 (as Monday is a holiday). Courses will be available to students that morning through the DoDEA Schoology portal: https://learn.dodea.edu/

For those of you who are continuing with us, there will be no change to your email or password. For those of you who are new to the program, please contact your local school which will provide you with your DoDEA google email address and your password. You will use that email address and password to log in to your course(s). All classes will be delivered through our Learning Management System, Schoology. Please ensure you use the DoDEA Schoology portal to log in (rather than another Schoology page). In some cases, students returning to our program for 2nd semester may find that they have been scheduled into another teacher’s course. This is not in error—because our program was designed as a temporary emergency response to the pandemic, we have had to return some of our teachers to their permanent positions in their local schools. This required us to reschedule students accordingly, but we have tried to minimize rescheduling as much as possible.

We’re excited to be finishing one semester and to be beginning another. We greatly appreciate your support as we continue our exciting virtual school journey together!

Respectfully
The DoDEA Virtual School Team

DVS Letter to Parents Oct 26, 2020

Dear Parents and Sponsors,

We have received requests to extend the November 6th cutoff registration date for the second semester education option (virtual school or in-person instruction). Although we all appreciate wanting to know more about what may, or may not, happen with the spread of COVID in the coming weeks, the reality is that this communicable disease is a world health problem with ever changing conditions across nations. Thus, DoDEA planning requires that we provide options within a contingency framework for operations.

A significant part of this effort is identifying which students will be moving to the virtual school, staying in the virtual school, returning to brick and mortar schools, or leaving the DoDEA system. This will involve a delicate balance of ensuring that the staffing needs of the virtual school and brick and mortar schools are met to the greatest extent possible. This process is complicated (and not without challenges), but the goal remains to provide families with an academic option during the global pandemic.

DVS Letter to Parents Oct 20, 2020

Dear Parents and Sponsors,

We are interested in getting some feedback about your, and your child’s, experience with the DoDEA Virtual School this school year.   The feedback provided will be invaluable and will be used to inform changes to the support and educational services provided to students in the DoDEA Virtual School.

A feedback link will be emailed to you later today.  DoDEA Virtual School students in grades 3 through 12 will also be receiving a link to their DoDEA email account.  The feedback form should take students 5 minutes or less to complete and should take parents/guardians between 5 and 10 minutes to complete, depending on the number of students you have enrolled in the DoDEA Virtual School.   The link that you will receive is unique for you and should not be forwarded to anyone else.  While the link is personalized for each survey participant, you should know that responses are anonymous, and that your/your student’s name, email or any other identifying information will never be attached to your responses.

We greatly appreciate your feedback and want you to know it will be given serious consideration as we evaluate, and work to improve, the support and educational services offered by the DoDEA Virtual School.

Sincerely,
DoDEA Virtual School Team

DVS Letter to Parents Oct 15, 2020

Dear Parents and Sponsors,

DoDEA recognizes that students and families with health vulnerabilities related to COVID-19 may still have concerns about returning to in-person instruction during second semester. To address parents’ concerns, DoDEA will continue the K-12 virtual option for the second semester of school year 2020-21. Parents that choose to enroll their students in the Virtual School option must agree to remain for the full second semester.

If your child is already enrolled in the DoDEA Virtual School, we ask that parents re-register by logging in to the Aspen Parent Portal using their child’s username and password. This re-registration needs to be completed by the November 6, 2020 deadline.

DVS Letter to Parents Oct 6, 2020

Dear Parents and Sponsors,

In many parts of the United States, the weather is getting cooler, the leaves are starting to change and the feel of fall is in the air. The start of this school year has been anything but normal, but what has been wonderful to observe is how our students and staff have made the best of a challenging situation. We’ve reached the midpoint of our first quarter and interim progress reports have been sent with student performance information. This is an opportune time to celebrate your student’s successes and reinforce productive habits to sustain and improve academic student achievement. Information will soon be provided on Quarter 1 Grade Reports and Parent Teacher Conferences.

DoDEA plans to continue to operate full-time in-person schools for the remainder of the school year. DoDEA has put in place numerous safety requirements and precautionary measures that follow The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and DoD guidance to ensure employees and students are protected to the greatest extent possible. During second semester, DoDEA will continue to provide a full-time virtual learning option for students and families with health vulnerabilities related to COVID-19 or who are concerned about returning to school. You will have the option to choose the best academic environment for your family. Specific details will soon be provided regarding the DVS Option Selection Window, which is anticipated to open later in October.

Thank you for your continued support of our virtual school journey!

DVS Letter to Parents Sept. 11, 2020

Dear Parents and Sponsors,

Thank you for visiting the DoDEA Virtual School K-8 Option website for the most updated and comprehensive virtual school information and DVS Administration contact information.

The DVS structure utilizes an asynchronous model with synchronous supports and curriculum that is designed solely for virtual instruction. The DVS procured courseware is designed to optimize online instruction. Students can access and complete coursework at their own pace with a level of independence with teacher and parent support. Our model will provide students with synchronous (live) sessions throughout the day (and the week). Teachers will introduce and reinforce concepts for their students in groups. We are working with our teachers to provide them with strategies for scheduling live sessions that will allow them to introduce and reinforce lessons.

Support services available for DVS students include Special Education, Advanced Academic Programs and Services (AAPS), and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
