Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment
DoWEA students can earn both college and high school credit to satisfy graduation requirements.
Eligible DoWEA high school students in grades 10 – 12 who are enrolled at least half time in a DoWEA high school may participate in dual enrollment. Dual enrollment allows students enrolled in DoWEA high schools to simultaneously earn both college and high school credit, which is used to satisfy DoWEA graduation requirements.
The dual enrollment course must satisfy DoWEA curriculum requirements to receive high school credit, and the grade awarded by the accredited college or university is used for the purposes of GPA and class ranking.
Students may request to take more college or university courses in addition to approved dual enrollment courses. The college or university will likely require the high school principal’s approval prior to enrollment. Additional college courses are not listed on the DoWEA high school transcript; only approved dual enrollment courses are listed on the DoWEA transcript.
Section 4.9 (pages 18-20) of DoDEA Administrative Instruction 1367.01: High School Graduation Requirements and Policy provides additional information about dual enrollment course credit.
All expenses associated with dual enrollment are the responsibility of the student/sponsor; DoWEA does not currently provide financial assistance for dual enrollment courses.

Update: NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT (NDAA) 2026 SEC. 584 AUTHORIZATION OF DUAL CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS OF DEFENSE DEPENDENT SCHOOLS
Section 584 of NDAA 2026 introduces a new provision authorizing the Secretary of Defense to create dual or concurrent enrollment programs for students attending Defense Dependent Schools. Through the Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA), the Secretary may form arrangements with colleges and universities to allow these high school students to take postsecondary courses and earn college credit. The provision also allows for financial assistance (pending available funds) to be provided to students to cover the expenses of such programs, with total aid for an individual student not to exceed $1,500 per school year.
A DoWEA team has begun the process of procuring agreements with institutions of higher education and updating DoDEA Administration Instruction 1367.01 High School Graduation Requirements and Policy. The current dual enrollment policy remains unchanged for the 2026 – 2027 school year.
On Wednesday, April 14, 2026, the Department of War Education Activity (DoWEA) posted a Request for Information (RFI) on SAM.gov to solicit input from eligible institutions of higher education regarding potential approaches to establishing a system‑wide dual enrollment program for DoWEA high school students, as part of DoWEA’s efforts to implement its dual and concurrent enrollment authority authorized under Section 584 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 (Pub. L. 119-60). The RFI is issued solely for information‑gathering and planning purposes and does not constitute a solicitation or obligate the Department to enter into any agreement. The RFI will be open for 45 days.
