Department of Defense Education Activity

Dear Garmisch Elementary Middle School Families,

I am absolutely thrilled to join the Garmisch community as the new school administrator. I am well aware of what a wonderful place GEMS is, and it is truly a dream come true to become a part of it.

Serving military connected students is a driving force for me. This focus comes from my experiences as a military member, a parent and teacher of DoDEA students, and also as a DoDEA administrator. Your children are the reason we exist, and helping them fulfill their potential is my top priority.

Prior to receiving this new position, I had the privilege of serving as an assistant principal at Ramstein Middle School. During this time, I placed an emphasis on developing a collaborative culture of school leadership that values input from all stakeholders: students, teachers, staff, families, and military partners.

I began my educational career as an Air Force JROTC Instructor and taught for 13 years. Helping students grow as leaders and become strong team players was a passion for me. I joined DoDEA in 2012 and had the honor of leading the largest AFJROTC unit in Europe at Kaiserslautern High School.

I served in the United States Air Force for 23 years. I began as an enlisted member and after receiving my commission I became an aviator, eventually becoming a pilot in the KC-135. My family and I were stationed in nine states as well as England and Germany.

My wife, Cathy, will be joining me in this new adventure. We enjoy hiking, biking, and traveling, as well as spending time visiting our three children and five grandchildren in the summer. She is equally excited to be joining the Garmisch community.

COVID-19 has certainly changed the way schools, students, and families interact. However, the importance of community remains essential. It will be my continued commitment to maintain resilient ties now, and to rebuild them even stronger when the world returns to normal. I am eager to begin and I hope to arrive sometime next week. Until we have a chance to meet in person, please feel free to reach out to me if I can be of service.

All the best,
Robert C. Meyer
