Department of Defense Education Activity
All after school clubs and activities (i.e. jump rope, art, music, math, sports, etc.)will normally meet only on days that the school follows a full day schedule, NOT on early release days. There is no extra-curricular activity bus for students who participate in these activities. Parents whose child frequently rides a bus must make transportation and/or other arrangements for the student to be picked up from school following the activity. Notification of these activities will be sent to the parent along with the day and time of the activity. In addition, due to unforeseen training, meetings, or teacher absences, an activity may be canceled without advanced notice. The sponsoring teacher will endeavor to notify students and parents of the canceled activity if time permits. If the activity is canceled at the last minute, students will be notified through the school intercom system at the end of the instructional day.

Sponsors of clubs and extracurricular activities determine academic and behavioral (disciplinary) requirements that students must meet to participate in school sponsored extracurricular activities or to hold a leadership position in a curriculum-related club, team or student organization.

Beginning Band Club

Beginning Band is a full year of music instruction on band instruments. This beginning band class develops skills on a variety of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Emphasis is given to providing a strong fundamental approach to their instrument. Rehearsal from the required Music Text, Essential Elements 2000 will be accomplished daily, as well as developmental music theory. Performance outside of normal school hours are required as part of this club.

Homework Club

Homework club is designed to:

  • Assist students with homework.
  • Model a positive atmosphere to study and do work
  • Provide tutoring and study skills
  • Help with CSI writing goal
  • Encourage children to view writing differently
  • Creative expression or written words
  • Enhance oral presentation skills.

Peer Tutoring Club

The Peer Tutoring program is geared towards students who fall between the 25th and 70th academic percentiles of our school. Students who are eligible to receive service must not receive any other support services provided by the school. This program matches students who need extra support in reading and/or math with peer tutors who are proficient in these areas. All participates will maintain confidentiality. This program strives to ensure students are able to receive one-on-one support to achieve success in school and reach their academic goals.

Tutor Requirements: 3-5 grade, must maintain B+/CD in subject to be tutored, must have classroom teacher, support staff and parent approval, one to three paragraph essay stating why they would like to be a tutor and would succeed at it, complete tutor application form. Requirements for students receiving tutors help: 1st-5th grade, must be receiving NO other support services, must fall within the 25th and 50th percentile of class, able to accept help and constructive criticism, teacher or parent recommended.

Robotics Club

Robotics Club is for students interested in all facets of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) and how it relates to robotics and computer programming. We will discuss how robots can aid our global society while putting our own ideas to the test with a little help from Lego Mindstorms.

Spelling Club

The club will consist of thirty students in grades 3-5 who are interested in participating. Each student who would like to participate must commit to practicing the word list to prepare for the upcoming spelling bee and return a permission slip/commitment letter signed by the parent and student. We will offer the Spelling Club to our super spellers to practice their word and spelling skills. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent. Come to as many club meetings as possible to help you prepare for the School Bee. The HCES School Spelling Bee will be held in April 2016. A list of spelling words will be distributed to students once the permission slip is signed and returned. The deadline for returning the permission slip is Friday, December 18. After this date, no other students can enlist in the School Spelling Bee. All students are expected to come to the club with their spelling words and a positive attitude. In order to make this a great experience for all who attend, disruptive behaviors will not be allowed. If a student is disruptive, the following procedure will occur: ?First time –Parents/Guardians will receive a warning letter. ?Second time –Parents/Guardians will receive a 2nd letter dismissing their child.

Student Council

Student Council is comprised of student leaders who promote school spirit and find ways to create a positive school environment.Student Council members discuss student and school issues. Members work in partnership with school leaders to make school improvements, boost school morale, and enhance the school climate as a whole.

Yearbook Club

Yearbook Club is a group of responsible 5th graders who create advertisement posters and take photographs at school for the school yearbook.These students help make decisions about the yearbook, advertise for yearbook sales, and assist in the photography for the yearbook.
