Individual Development Plan (IDP) Process for Employees
Where is your career headed next? How will you get there?
DoDEA's best resource is its people. You are dedicated, motivated professionals working every day to make things better for our students and families. As you grow and learn new skills we want you to climb the career ladder and achieve your long-term goals. Individual Development Plans are designed to help you articulate your career goals and which steps you need to take to achieve those goals.
What is an Individual Development Plan?
- A document that describes where you want to be in the future, with clear steps on how you're going to get there.
- A career goal-setting plan that helps you achieve personal career growth.
- Your Success Plan for moving forward!
What's your next job going to be? How will you excel in the one you have now? If you don't know, you need an IDP.
An IDP can be as simple as some notes jotted down in a meeting with your supervisor or as complex as a multi-tabbed, color-coded, spreadsheet.
The Cornerstone On-Demand (CSOD) Learning Management System (LMS) Individual Development Plan (IDP) Pilot project
In January of 2021 DoDEA employees from Human Resources, Information Technology, and Curriculum & Instruction came together to develop an IDP system that would help DoDEA staff plan for their future with the help of their supervisors. The goal was simple: to give DoDEA staff a way to create a career plan. Development plan templates were created, and employees customized them with help from their supervisors. The pilot project helped to create a smooth IDP process and create IDP FAQ.

What’s your next job going to be? How will you excel in the one you have now? If you don’t know, you need an IDP.
An IDP can be as simple as some notes jotted down in a meeting with your supervisor or as complex as a multi-tabbed, color-coded, spreadsheet.
Follow the instructions in the Employee IDP Task Aid Packet to create your Individual Development Plan in the Cornerstone On-Demand (CSOD) system (LMS). When you finish selecting learning and development activities, you’ll click “submit plan”. That saves a copy of your plan and shares it with your supervisor. You and your supervisor can then discuss your learning plan at your mutual convenience.
Ideally, your supervisor will help you close the gap between the skills you have and the ones you need to move forward. If they don’t have the expertise to help, they may be able to help you find someone who does.

No. Employees who are not interested in documenting their goals are not required to create an IDP.
An IDP does not guarantee that you’ll be selected when a job becomes available or increase your chances of being selected for a position. Following an IDP does help you become a more competitive applicant who has the necessary certifications, training, and skills.
You’re in charge of what goes on your IDP. If you’re only interested in excelling in your current job, you can fill your IDP with training and growth opportunities to improve your performance.
Your IDP belongs to you! If you’re interested in switching career paths or working in another specialty, you create an IDP that aligns to those goals. Your IDP isn’t restricted in any way – you don’t have to focus on careers within your current department or even on jobs within DoDEA.
Task Aid Shows Employees How to:
- Choose your next goal
- Create a list of CSOD LMS classes, outside training and development activities that support that goal
- Create a personal IDP with those classes, automatically sharing it with your supervisor
- Meet with your supervisor to discuss your goal, potentially adding training to your IDP
-
Complete the items on your IDP and achieve your goal!
