Kent Bassett - Landstuhl ES Principal

Kent Bassett became the principal of Landstuhl Elementary School in August 2020.  LEMS is a school of 500 children in grades Pre-K through Fifth, located in the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Mr. Bassett graduated from Clover Park High School in 1977 (Washington State). He received his undergraduate degree, as well as his secondary teaching credential, from Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington.  He received his master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix.  

In 2001, Mr. Bassett accepted a teaching position with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools at Vilseck, Germany, where he taught middle school English and social studies, in addition to high school English, journalism and yearbook. In October 2004, Mr. Bassett accepted the assistant principal position at A.T. Mahan High School in Keflavik, Iceland.  His second year in Iceland he became the assistant principal at both the elementary and high schools.  In 2006, after Iceland closed, Mr. Bassett was assigned to Baumholder where he was the assistant principal at Baumholder Middle/High School from 2006 – 2008.  In 2008, Mr. Bassett became the principal of Smith Elementary School, located on Smith Barracks in Baumholder.  From 2009 to 2020, Kent was the principal of Sembach Middle School, until it closed in June 2020.

While in college, Kent swam and played water polo.  His love of sports led him into coaching, beginning with swimming in 1979. Since then, and throughout his career as an educator, Kent has coached swimming, water polo, basketball, baseball, fast pitch, football, and soccer at both the middle and high school levels. 

In 2013, after 28 years of service, Mr. Bassett retired from the reserves after having served with the Marine Corps, the Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve.
Mr. Bassett believes, strongly, that students, parents, and teachers are partners in a young person’s education.  From this foundation/partnership, young people develop personal responsibility, accountability for their actions, integrity, and life-long skills to become productive citizens of the Twenty-First Century. Mr. Bassett believes that all children should have equal access and opportunity to receive the best education possible. 

Kent and his wife Bonnie, the former Bonnie G. Gibson, have been married for 29 years. Their son, Sam, serves in the United States Air Force and is currently stationed at Ramstein AB.
