AFNORTH international students reach for stars at Euro Space Center
In an exciting celebration of internationalism, eighth-grade students from AFNORTH International School — representing a diverse tapestry of NATO member countries — embarked on an immersive three-day study trip to the Euro Space Center.
This unique excursion brought together a multinational student body, encouraging cross-cultural communication and global collaboration. Working shoulder-to-shoulder in teams defined by their vibrant white, green, and marine T-shirts, the students transcended national borders to tackle complex challenges, proving that teamwork is the ultimate tool for exploring the unknown.
The intensive three-day itinerary was a masterclass in STEM learning and project-based education. Students dove headfirst into space science, participating in rigorous hands-on activities that included building and launching models during rocket workshops, conducting physics experiments, and studying life on the international space station in the "Life" modules.
Their teamwork and collaboration skills were put to the test during their simulated Shuttle Missions where students role played Flight Controller position to successfully launch the space shuttle, dock with the International Space Station, and return their pilot and commander home. These projects forced the young scientists to analyze data, think critically, and problem solve in real-time, bridging the gap between classroom textbooks and actual aerospace applications.
The absolute highlight for the aspiring astronauts was the chance to experience authentic, real-life astronaut training simulations. Throughout the three days, students rotated through high-intensity simulators designed to mimic the physical sensations of space travel. They tested their equilibrium on the Rotating Chair, multi-axis chair, and Rotor, Microgravity Wall and experienced the surreal sensation of low gravity via the Moonwalk simulation.
From working as team to construct a satellite in the Clean Room, to touring the virtual cosmos in the Planetarium, this captivating trip not only deepened their appreciation for space exploration but also inspired the next generation of global STEM leaders.
