Antilles High School has launched a new student-led initiative aimed at spreading positivity and strengthening the school community: the Pirate Kindness Ambassadors. Guided by AHS Counselors Dr. Eddie Montalvo and Ms. Annette Garcia, MFLC Counselor Ms. L. Costa, and Information Specialist Ms. Amarilys Diaz, the program empowers students who demonstrate leadership, empathy, and positive influence among their peers.

During their first meeting, mentors introduced the central theme of the Ripple Effect—the concept that every action, word, and choice creates a chain reaction that touches the lives of others. Students were encouraged to reflect deeply on how they contribute to the school environment and to consider a meaningful question: “What is your ripple?” The call for participation was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Many students embraced the challenge to lead with kindness, helping to build a culture of wellness and connection across campus.

Among these young leaders were juniors Sara Rodriguez and Jaylanis Castillo, who proposed a heartfelt project to celebrate gratitude within the school community. Acknowledging that some families may be facing financial challenges due to the recent government shutdown, the pair envisioned a “Cart of Gratitude”—a mobile Friendsgiving experience designed to remind students of the many things they can still be thankful for.

Sara and Jaylanis presented their idea to the Kindness Ambassador mentors, Principal Mr. Mateo, and the AHS Parent Teacher School Organization, all of whom offered enthusiastic support. They then invited fellow Kindness Ambassadors Dylan Cardona, Abbiel Santos, Hiram Zeno, and Kaylen Santiago to join in the project. Each student accepted the challenge and contributed their own ripple of positivity to bring the vision to life.

On November 17, 2025 the Cart of Gratitude made its debut. A decorated cart—stocked with cookies, muffins, chips, candy, fruit, and juice—traveled through classrooms and common areas. Students were invited to enjoy a treat and write messages of thankfulness on sticky notes and a shared poster board. By day’s end, the display had grown into a vibrant mosaic of gratitude, showcasing the thoughtful reflections of the Pirate community. The event was met with excitement, appreciation, and genuine joy. Students and staff alike remarked on the positive energy flowing throughout the school—a testament to the ripple effect sparked by these dedicated Ambassadors.

The success of the Cart of Gratitude marks only the beginning for the Pirate Kindness Ambassadors. With compassionate leadership from students like Sara, Jaylanis, Dylan, Abbiel, Hiram, and Kaylen, and the ongoing support of the AHS staff, Antilles High School is continuing to nurture a culture where kindness is not only encouraged—but contagious. As the Ambassadors continue their work, they leave the school community—and every reader—with an invitation: Pause and reflect on your own ripple effect. How do your actions, words, and choices impact those around you?
