Camp Lejeune ESY Program Brings Ocean Learning to Students

Supporting military-connected students often means creating learning opportunities that extend beyond the traditional school year. This summer, students at Camp Lejeune participated in an Extended School Year program built around the theme "By the Sea," combining academic instruction with hands-on exploration of ocean life.

Throughout the program, students participated in lessons designed to support individual learning goals while encouraging curiosity and engagement. Activities incorporated reading, mathematics and life-skills instruction, all connected to the ocean-themed curriculum. Teachers used real-world examples to help students strengthen academic skills in meaningful ways.

A highlight of the program was a visit from Mary Downing of the Onslow County Museum, who shared information about marine life found along the North Carolina coast. Students asked questions and participated in discussions during the presentation.

The interactive session included opportunities for students to observe and touch taxidermied sea animals, giving them a hands-on look at species native to the region and reinforcing concepts introduced in the classroom.

Following the presentation, students created fish prints, combining art and science while reinforcing lessons learned throughout the program. The activity encouraged creativity and collaboration while extending the ocean-focused learning experience.

The Camp Lejeune ESY program provided students with opportunities to strengthen academic and life skills through engaging, hands-on activities. The program also highlighted the role of community partnerships in supporting learning experiences for military-connected students during the summer months.
