Operation Turkey Tray Brings Fort Stewart Community Together
On Nov. 20, Charles P. Murray Elementary School hosted Operation Turkey Tray, a Thanksgiving celebration that brought together soldiers, civilians and school staff to serve hundreds of students and families a festive holiday meal. The event's success owed much to the extraordinary efforts of community volunteers.
The school buzzed with warmth and holiday cheer as volunteers spent hours preparing trays, serving meals with enthusiasm and handling cleanup afterward. Their professionalism, positive attitudes and flexibility made the day a resounding success.
Volunteers from the Directorate of Emergency Services; Chief Bryan Lynch; Maj. Richard Barrick; Carl Smith; Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation School Liaison Officers Angela Rickett and Melany Amato; DoDEA Community Support Office members Mitch Finley and Courtney Cline; and numerous soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment went above and beyond, exemplifying the spirit of service and community. Their dedication enabled hundreds of students and parents to share a warm Thanksgiving celebration that strengthened school ties and reflected the Army's values of excellence and teamwork.
“Seeing soldiers and civilians come together to serve our families was truly heartwarming,” said Sharon Summerlin, principal of Murray Elementary School. “This event wasn’t just about food — it was about building connections and showing our students what community looks like.”
“It is what we are here for, serving the community,” said Chief Bryan Lynch of the Fort Stewart DES. “We were happy to support this event.”
“What an amazing turnout of volunteers,” said cafeteria manager Jose Lopez. “We are overwhelmed with the support and help.”
Murray Elementary School expressed deep gratitude to all volunteers and partners for their time, energy and dedication. Their efforts represented the best of Fort Stewart, creating a memorable experience with lasting impact on students and families.
